Cable router

I'm going to be getting a cable router to hook up two computers to my @Home internet connection. One computer is heavily used for gaming and other special applications--gamespy, icq, mIRC, etc.. The other is mostly just used for web browsing and email. So I've done some research and I know that I will be needed a router that supports port range mapping. I really don't understand what port range mapping is. Maybe someone could explain this? Also I need PPPoe and changeable host name. And I will also need the router to support a large number of simultaneous connections. Can anyone reccomend a good router that fulfills all of these requirements? Has anyone successfully gotten Gamespy, ICQ, mIRC, quake3, tribes2, etc.. to work with any routers? I've heard people recommend the Linksys and the SMC Barricade but I'm still unsure.

The Linksys BEFSR41 has all the requirements you need. Port fowarding is so the router can foward the ports to the computers. If you don't use this feature you can't play quake3 and that other stuff. There is also a DMZ feature on the router that alows all the ports on the computer to be fowarded.

Linksys's router is a bit more well known then SMC's router.

Price wise.. They are about the same, but Linksys tends to have rebates now and then. Much more often then SMC. I got my Linksys $100 Shipped and taxed from a rebate offer.

I think I'm leaninig towards the Linksys router at this point. My main concern is that I want to be able to run gamespy, icq, mIRC, quake3, tribes2, etc...without any problems.

The Linksys router does everything you ask for. Gamespy, Q3, UT, HL, mIRC, newsgroups, you name it. And my software firewall never gets used anymore!

No more port-sniffers...

you could just get another IP from @home for $5 a month, save some money, and get a switch instead of a hub.

Hmmm I guess that's true. I never thought about that. Of course then I would be missing out on all the features/benefits (and headaches) that a router provides.

The Linksys router is very easy to set up. It is very cheap too.

What about the Netgear? Looks like they have three different models that are seem pretty similar. The FR314, RP114, and the RT314.

[edit]looks like the RP114 is the best of the bunch there. Which one is better, the Netgear RP114 or the Linksys BEFSR41?
