Unexpected/seemingly strange changes to localized regions are usually caused by very large, sweeping changes in the upper layers of the atmosphere, creating dramatic shifts all over. One of the biggest examples is the breakdown of the polar vortex. Warming temperatures creates perturbations in the flow of air around the arctic, which in turn causes the air flow to change, slow down, and leak out, which in turn leads to supercooled air leaking out southward, namely into the canada/northern US, causing the extreme winter temperature shifts we've been seeing occur more and more often.
The next big one will be the breakdown of the NAC. UK is gonna turn into Canada.
