So finally got the 3d plasma hooked up, and gave black ops a whirl in 3d mode. Its quite impressive. The 3d effect is very well used - rather than have everything consantly popping out at you, it's more of a sense of depth into the screen. Except for your gun, especially when looking down the sights - that really pops out at you and is a really cool effect. Especially with the red dot, you can see how the dot is projected out in front of you, and you can really see the depth of the tube of the sight itself.
Of course, there are many caveats. The most obvious is the performance. Gone is the silky smooth 60fps, traded in for an unlocked frame rate which generally hovers around 30, with the occasional dip above or below. It still looks great as 30fps is a pretty standard frame rate, but it's not typical call of duty smooth. The resolution may also be cut as well, hard to tell. It's a pretty tough tradeoff to make as the 3d really adds to the experience in a huge way. The 360 and ps3 just aren't up to the task.
And as you play, you really see what at afterthought 3d is in this game. A few things stick out. While the red dot/reflex is tuned well for 3d, the acog and iron sights are not. There's a very obvious problem here - looking down a sight IRL you'd have one eye closed - you wouldn't even be able to look down a sight with both eyes at the same time at all in most cases. So you get kind of a double image on the sight. The acog is really tough as the dot of the sight feels very close. Some iron sights are good, some bad. The red dot feels perfect as the dot feels in the distance, but it doesn't seem as if they even tried to find a solution for any other sight.
For the chopper in campaign, the crosshairs were really close and made it very hard to aim as well.
And there's some really obvious things, like the fact that depth of field blurring is still enabled in 3d mode. Why? DoF is a camera trick to simulate depth, which simply isn' needed and is counter productive for stereoscopic 3d, not to mention it's eating up scarce system resources.
So it's pretty clear they really just threw this on at the last minute. Which is fine, few can take advantage of it and it's relatively easy to implement on a technical level. But more than anything else it's being held back by the console. I know there's a lot of naysayers out there on 3d, but this is the future here. You'll always be able to opt out, but when it's done right, trust me, you won't want to. 3d tvs at the moment are nothing more than high end 2d tvs, and it won't be long before it filters down to the mainstream and a ton of people have them. The missing piece of the puzzle here is the next gen of consoles. A next gen CoD with ground up stereo 3d is going to blow peoples minds.
Can't wait.
