Don't get the cheap ones from a dept store or gas station. Go to a proper shop with a walk-in cigar humidor room in the back. Ask them for recommendations.

Romeo y Julieta and Davidoff (Grand Cru) make decent cigars to start you off.

Occidental Reserve is a good cheap mild cigar that I would recommend for someone who hasn't smoked before. Chances are, since you are a beginner, you won't be able to tell the difference between a $3 cigar and $20 one anyway.

After something light, you may want to move up to something a bit stronger, perhaps a Perdomo (I like Lot 23) or a Montecristo. Both are about a medium strength. I can give you plenty of recommendations if you are interested.

Flavored cigars are for people who don't like tobacco. But if that's your bag, Acid and some of the other Drew Estate stuff are decent.

That is neither a cigar nor tobacco. Pipe tobacco is good because you can get a corncob pipe for a couple bucks and tobacco is cheap as dirt.

Don't smoke it too fast. You may get lightheaded and feel queasy.

Damn straight. I went to a cigar tasting with a couple buddies, and a friend of mine who doesn't smoke sucked down a Zino Classic way too fast. He was puking for about 30 minutes.

I'm curious on this also. So you actually inhale with a cigar?
I should know this. I did smoke for about 3mths, but only Djarums (strong clove cigs)
How about pipe smoking?

I love the smell of pipe smoke, but have heard it tastes like shit.

I would not recommend inhaling cigars or pipes. Pipe tobacco taste great. Tons of flavors, great aroma, and super cheap.

I have an Original Bing Crosby pipe I paid $350. for............. What would you recommend for tah-backky? Do I have to go to a Tobbaco shop, or can I get something from a drugstore that's decent?

I don't mind spending for good stuff, so let me know.

I would definately go to a tobacco shop. I've never smoked anything from a drugstore or convienent store, but I can't image it'd do justice for that pipe.

Pics?

Start mild

I recommend...

R&J
Punch
5 Vegas Gold
Cusano 18

If you are not a smoker...PUFF...Do NOT inhale.

Also take your time. A decent sized cigar should take at least 45 mins to work through if not an hour or more. Enjoy the experience and relax.

I smoke cigars occasionally, but I don't know a lot about cigars. Like I'm at the cigar store, the man behind the counter says "what kind of cigars do you like?" "Uhh... Itsaboys."

1) Don't buy a cigar from a grocery store or gas station. Go to a cigar shop. Or at the very least go to a cigarette outlet like Choice.
2) Start off with something small.
3) Start off with something mild.

I tend to smoke Romeo and Juliets. They are average quality, pretty cheap, and taste good.

If you start off with some giant robust cigar, you'll probably get nauseous and throw it out. You have to build up a tolerance to the nicotine before you make that jump.

4) Drink some bourbon or scotch (neat) while you smoke it.
5) Don't inhale. I just puff, and if I want to make myself more buzzed, I bring the smoke into my mouth, then blow it out my nose. That'll send the nicotine straight to the bloodstream without bringing the smoke into your lungs.
6) Oh, and for the love of god, don't ever buy a flavored cigar. Ever.

Start with something mild (maybe a Macanudo cafe) and see if you like it. Starting with too strong of a cigar for the first time and you could get yourself in trouble (smoke it too fast and you'll get incredibly nauseous).

Keep in mind that when people are saying try CAO or Montecristo or whatever, these are just brands, and each brand often has different labels that are very different. CAO makes probably 10 different CAO labels (of different flavors and strengths).

Go to your local tobacco shop and tell them that you're new to smoking and that you wanted to try a few different brands that are mild to medium and give him your budget. They can probably recommend some to you. Or order a sampler from one of the online stores (like from the Hot deals forum). I only order my cigars online, from either Famous Smokes or Cigars Intl by the box or bundle. But cigars from online sources tend to need a little "resting" before smoking (they dehydrate a little during shipping so I usually stick in the bottom of my coolerador for a while... dry cigars tend to be harsher).
