Camper Survives Bear Mauling
Animal Dragged Woman Away and Covered Her With Brush

ALBRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. (May 3) - A group of campers said a bear dragged a woman into the woods, clawed her and bit her, then covered her with brush and left.

Kathleen Feeney, 21, said she was too frightened to move as the animal tore off her poncho and sweat shirt, clawed at her back and bit her head, and wondered, ''When will it stop?''

''At one point,'' she said Monday, ''the bear lay down beside me.''

Feeney was camping on the eastern edge of Hickory Run State Park with Brian Scollon, 19, and Robert Brennan, 21. They bought some food, stored it in a tent, and went fishing.

Feeney returned to the camp, found the bear in the tent and ran back to the others with the bear chasing her. The three then fled.

Brennan clambered up a steep slope to the Pennsylvania Turnpike and tried to flag down motorists. None stopped, but someone called state police.

Feeney and Scollon ran through bushes and tried to take refuge behind a large tree, with the bear taking swipes at them with its paws. Scollon drew his hunting knife.

''I tried to stab him,'' said Scollon, interviewed with Feeney at her home Monday night.

Then the bear dragged Feeney into the woods. Scollon said he shouted, ''Play dead, Kathleen.''

Feeney said the bear tore at her clothes, bit her, covered her with brush and tree branches, and eventually left. She said she could hear Scollon yelling, ''Run to my voice.''

At nearly midnight, Scollon climbed the slope to the turnpike, where state police were waiting, followed by the wounded Feeney.

Feeney was treated at Lehigh Valley Hospital for scratch marks on her back, bites on the back of her head and a puncture wound on her leg. She was discharged Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Park officials said it was the first attack by a bear in Hickory Run's history.

educate me - bears come looking for food... how likely are they to attack humans, just because ? Only when they're threatened ?

When they are threatened, or to show dominance.

It's not bear season.
(or, go ahead, which state? I just googled Cali; not there. Most (all?) states are in the fall.)

Does it matter? They can run a heck of a lot faster than you can.
Bears: play dead (spray with pepper spray first so they can identify which bear killed you after they find your body)

Cougars: fight for your life

If I camp anywhere I take a gun.

BTW-The best way to handle a bear attack is to play dead...assuming you don't have, at the very least, a .44 Magnum handgun handy.

Brown bears, yes.

Grizzly and black bears, no.

If you play dead for a grizzly that is looking at you as prey, he will say "Thanks for the easy lunch.".

DO NOT play dead during a black bear attack.

You're only supposed to play dead as a very last resort.

If stranges ran outta the woods and flagged me down I'd have called the state police / 911 instead of stopping too. Sorry, that's just an akward situation and doubtful I'd be able to help either. These days could be psycho looking to bring me back into the woods...

I bet that it had cubs around. It's spring and the mothers are very protective while looking for food.

Only play dead if it is a mother bear defending her cubs. If the bear is not defending itself, then it is searching for prey and will enjoy the easy meal. In this case you should act big, yell, throw rocks and fight or run if you must only run a short distance to your car. But beware as bears can run much faster than you.

Yeah, I frequently go bear hunting with a knife. I usually have a helicopter drop me off in the Alaskan wilderness armed only with a knife and a bottle of water, at which point I hunt for Kodiac bears. If the bear is a smaller grizzly, I'll even give the knife to the bear and I'll take it on by hand.

I've been to Hickory Run State Park plenty of times, never been mauled by a bear tho. Some folks get all the good campin' stories to tell!

IME black bears are usually quite "tame" if you dont bother them. they may go after you food, but thats usually about it.
