They have no BIOS options for overclocking. I believe it's possible to do a BSEL mod with a Dell, although I'm not 100% certain on that.

no they cant. you can however mod your cpu as DSF said, tricking it to run at a higher bus speed and increasing the speed the cpu will run at.

If your motherboard doesn't have any overclocking options like PCI lock, when you overclock your CPU FSB with software then you are overclocking everything else with it.

I overclocked my Dell.

I suppose certain chipsets can be used with Clockgen, probably any Nvidia chipset. I know Dell sold AMD CPU systems, but never researched to see what chipset they used.

If someone buys a Dell instead of biulding their own, should they really be doing stuff like BSEL mods? Will they have the resources and tools necessary to make it happen? If they can't put together their own system, should they be voiding their warranty, tearing apart their system and risking permanent damage to the components inside the case?

Some of the software mentioned may give that Dell some limited overclockability, but I don't know if there would be enough overhead to make it all worthwhile.

I did it for the "edutainment" of it. Since then my Vostro 200 has been sitting unused in my garage. Anyone want to buy it for cheap?

I did the BSEL mod on my Compaq with an e2140. Using CPU-ID the bus speed is now 1066, but the multiplier goes back and forth between 6 and 8, giving a reported cpu speed of either 1.6 or 2.133. Seems to stay at the higher speed undel load as far as I can tell.

Is that normal for an e2140 to change speeds ? Or is it an indication of a problem ?

I overclocked my dell at work from 2.1 to 2.4 using clockgen. Unfortunately, the cooling sucks and I run seti 24/7 on it so that's about as good as it gets for me. Still, 2.4 on an x2 4000+ isn't too bad for a dell...

Here they seem to have done a good job and gotten good results of overclocking a few DELL E521's and C521's though those are AMD based.
