I was wondering if this is possible?:

I bought a wireless network adapter pci card and wanted to set it up so that my laptop could lease an ip address from the PC. since the laptop is the only computer that will be wifi i really dont need a router. I used the network wizard on XP to set it up as "wired network adapter1" as internet and the "wireless network adapter2" as other computers connet to, but my note book couldnt detech the network.

Is this possible, or do i have to buy a router!

You did not indicate what your Internet source is.

Assuming that it is a regular broadband (DSL/Cable) you are much better with a Router. Price wise the difference is minimal. Router is safer and provides more stable Internet connection then direct connect of a computer to the Internet. The Wireless connection will be much better with a Wireless cable/DSL Router.

If later on you need to add another computer to your network, the system will be ready. With your current plan you would be back in square one.

However if you want to stay with what you have.

Configure the two Wireless cards to Ad-Hoc mode, and use Windows ICS for Routing.

good deal, worked but i couldnt get through to the net. not sure what the problem is but i am working on it.

I really dont want the router because i really have no use for it. Plus, i am using an smc adapter for 25$ so u cant get any cheaper than that. ; )

It too late to mess with it tonight, and will get back to work on it tomorrow and probably ask for more help then. ; )

INFO:
on cable modem

connection= cable modem to computer to wired router

this is what i wanted:

computer with ethernet 1 & wireless 2 connected through the wired router and did the soho wizard, after which i did the ad-hoc mod. when i did this i lost the internet connection of the computer but the wireless connection worked and was able to get files off the computer. tomorrow i will try the adapter on the server that is between the modem and router.

thanks for the help, cya tomorrow ; )

Cable Modem to Computer to Wired Router? Why?

By doing the Wireless Ad-Hoc you creating (as it should) a second (or possibly third) Network. So File transfer works as it should, but you would not get the Internet to the Wireless computer since it need Routing. ICS would not work this way with the being second or third Router.

A Wired Router (or any Router) is piece of plastic with few silicon chips inside, no need to get attached to these thingies; there are Wireless Routers on sale for $10-$20.

heheh

well im running the server in front of the router cause i couldnt get anyone to connect to my game that i was serving. even when the appropriate ports were open. i have a feeling that it is the ip addressing. i might try to using the same ip address from my isp and barrow from the subnet mask, may resolve problem.

i had a feeling that my cheap mans wirless would probably not work, heheh. i looked at newegg for one but cheapes was the belkin for 55$, if you have any suggestions on where to get cheaper let me know. ty man

this should be very easy to do, though your connection is going to be quite limited without lots of configuring. First..you seem to have your router connected and sharing fine with your main computer. On the 2nd computer behind the router, your going to configure its main connection as "I connect to the internet through this computer, computers will connect through me" or something close to that. You configure this on your main ethernet adapter. This will result in other adapters, like the wifi, binding or bridging to the ethernet adapter. Then you don't need to do much configuring with the wifi, you connect using adhoc, set up your IPs (Don't mess with dhcp, I dont think you even have it unless you have win2k server edition), make your gateway the wifi IP of the desktop (NOT the ethernet ip), and everything should be ok.
