Can only upgrade one thing

My bro has a older Celeron 566@850,256mb,Radeon 7200,ect. Well he can only upgrade one thing right now to help play BF1942. Well BF1942 runs fine its DC mod that won't run good.

Which is he better off doing new video card or new CPU?

What kind of budget are we talking about here? I am inclined to say get a GeForce3...I am assuming budget is kinda tight since he can only upgrade one thing.

its real hard to say but u really cant do much with the processor rather it be slot or socket celeron, whatever u spend, u can prolly spend the same and get a brand new CPU (AthlonXP) or something of the sort. So if he just wants to do the BF1942 thing, i would just go with the video card idea. IMO thats the best way to go.

For gaming yes. I was in the same predictment with older machine. I had 550E clock to 803mhz. I upgraded from GF to GF2 and made a big difference. You might find yourself a sweet P3 thats overclockable and GF3 for under 100 total.

But IMHO I would choose video card upgrade.

On the AT FS/T forums:

Tualatin Celeron (1.1-1.4) + Modded Slotket sells for ~$40 (albeit rarer)
GeForce3 Ti200 sells for $40

Either of those will enhance it greatly. While the GF3 would probably garner higher FPS in games, the Tualatin proc will make everyday usage better.

I would agree that it would help to get a budget amount first. Obviously, the video card is a definite, but your CPU may hold it back some. From most significant increase,

1 - Video Card
2 - CPU
3 - Ram (based on OS that is being used)

If BF1942 runs "fine" as is. But the DC mod is the problem, I've heard the DC mod takes gobs of ram, so that would be my recommendation.

Even if you are running the standard version Of Battlefield You are gonna need ALOT of ram.

Anyone with a gig of ram should run Taskmonitor or Perfmon, and you would see that it typicaly takes 650-750 Mb RAM (depending on map Standard Battlefield). My freind has a 2.4Ghz machine, with a geforce 3 video card, and 512Mb of ram. He was noticing a little laggyness we messed with videocard and Ram, and by far RAM made the biggest diffrence.

Swaping out ram to the Harddrive in games is a huge problem. Watch your Harddrive light when you play.. Mine hardly moves. Practly no activity..

Of course This is pertaining to Windows 200 or XP. 9x Os's dont utilize RAM the same way and I cant speak as to how more affects performance in the Windows 9x (95 98 ME) system.
