Can Sex Induce Labor?

So a friend of mine claims that she had sex a few weeks before she was due and in the process induced labor. This sounds like an Old Wives' Tale to me. I've never heard of such an thing, anywhere. So what do you think? Is it coincidence or......?

Yes, for thousands of years us males have been forced to work and do tasks for sex. I guess sex does induce labor in our case.

Yeah it does except that she has the timing off. Sometimes labor comes 9 months after sex.

My wife thought so (much to my delight). I was a labor inducing tool for a week straight prior to her delivery. I doubt the validity of the practice but in my case I did not argue.

Pitocin ? a synthetic form of oxytocin ? can be used to induce labor. It's given intravenously through a pump to start contractions and used for the duration of labor.

? Nipple stimulation to release your own natural oxytocin. Massaging the nipples can cause uterine contractions, but this technique would not be used to jump-start labor if it needed to be induced right away. Also, since nipple stimulation can hyperstimulate the uterus, the fetus would need to be monitored, so don't try this at home.

I guess maybe nipple stimulation during sex....

Actually there is some merit to it. Its far from a sure fire way, but it can induce labor. You gotta bump that cervix, though, stimulate that sucker. If you can't reach that far in, well, sorry bout your damn luck.

Do not do it without the advice/consent of your obstetrician.

On second thought, I may need to point out that the cervix thing was a joke. No telling how many people might read that and start trying to follow my advice.

I was 81/2 months pregnant. Felt a little ya know So we did... And later that night....bingo!labour had begun!

Yes, it can. Talk to your OB/GYN prior to kicking things off, though. In an overdue situation you're likely to get recommendations to do anything to stress the body that might kick off labor, including walking stairs, driving on rough roads, and ----.
