You want something to just read text files to you? Or do you want something were you can just highlight text and have it read it to you?

Well Debian has some documentation on aviable accessability software.

Most of that should apply to Ubuntu.

For Gnome desktop there are two packages aiviable for intregrated screen readers.. Gnopernicus or Gnome-orca. I beleive Gnome-Orca is newer, and is under development by Sun Microsystems. I don't know which one is better.

For my own purposes I just used festival command line tools to do little scripts or whatnot when I wanted something read, but it is mostly just as a toy thing. Festival is a fairly sophsiticated speech synth that lots of other programs use for their engines, at least optionally.

One that can do both. I'm going to check out festival. Seems like soemthing im looking for.

Festival is pretty nice, I've tinkered with the gaim-plugin a little, inflection is terrible, but pronunciation is pretty decent.
