Can the APU be fried...

...if you plug in the 12V CPU power backwards? (don't ask how ) I believe the black wires were plugged into where the yellow wires were supposed to go.

The orientation was such that pin 1 went into the pin 4 socket on the motherboard.

The computer would start up for a split second then stop. The cpu fan would only make one revolution before stopping. I can't power the PC without physically turning the PSU off and on again. I tried resetting CMOS. Breadboarding...

When I swapped power supplies, the pc was able to power up. All the fans, Hard drives, keyboard, mouse, stays powered on. But, there would be no signal to the monitor. (using no discrete graphics card. ) I tried using a discrete graphics card but still no signal.

Is there any hope? Can the psu be damaged that way or would a fault in the psu cause issues? is the apu a goner? Is there any way to test for a dead processor? I get no beeps from the speaker. Is the motherboard ok since it seems like everything is being powered properly? Should I try resetting CMOS again?

I got this motherboard

and this PSU

and an A6 5400K (RIP?)

Thanks!

You could have fried your mobo or CPU if you are unlucky. Only way to tell is to get another CPU or Mobo and test it out. Your choice.

P.S

I guess you worked this out now but there is a reason whenever you look at a "how to build a pc" guide they use the term "minimum insertion force". If something doesn't slide in easily then it isn't supposed to go there, anyway it has happened now.

If you find out what the problem was then report back and let us know you fixed it.

I second this.

Thanks guys. I will probably purchase the APU first. If that doesn't work then the motherboard.

I have to get a PSU too because that is dead. Could plugging in that 12 volt connector wrong break the PSU?

If not I wonder if the PSU was faulty to begin with? But this is Corsair...

Yes, that could potentially fry the PSU. Yes, it could've been faulty to begin with. Corsair's certainly less likely to let a dead PSU leave the factory than, say, Diablotek, but that doesn't mean Corsair PSUs never arrive DOA.

I cautiously agree with this, I don't want to tell you to RMA the parts if you know you fried them but as it stands you never had a working system. Perhaps try RMAing the PSU and see what corsair say about it.

Thanks Puppies! I am not concerned with RMA. I am honest to a fault at times. I was concerned the PSU based on the volt readings. it would only spike to about 1.2 Volts and shut down. I just want to get this system up and running.

Ok well you need a new PSU and mobo then, it is highly unlikely that a damaged CPU could break a new board however a damaged board could fry a cpu so get those 2 parts and try your existing CPU and see what happens.

Let us know how it goes.

Update:

I tried troubleshooting some more. One thing I notice is that when I leave the CPU 12 V connector unplugged it acts pretty much the same as if it was plugged in, except I can't shut it off by pushing the power button.

I noticed I do not get any beeping from the motherboard, even with no RAM installed.

I tried different display ports and even different monitors. VGA, DVI, HDMI...

When the VGA cable is unplugged, the monitor displays "searching for signal" when it is plugged into the motherboard, it changes to "no signal"

I guess I will try to change the motherboard first

Thanks!
