Computer at my parents house has WinXP installed (NTFS) and while I'm here over break I wanted to play a few games that don't work on XP, I need to install Win98...

Problem is I can't just install Win98 on a NTFS drive, without formatting it and I can't lose files my parents use on this computer.

Is there anyway I can get Win98 on this computer without formatting and losing everything? I know about the compatability option for running older programs in WinXP but it never works, its pretty much a worthless feature.

If I can't put some games on this computer its going to be a long week

Sounds like theres no way to install win98 on this computer without formating...

Is it impossible to create another partition on this hard drive without erasing all the current information on it, and format it to be fat32 so I can install 98 on that?

There is a way . And I have tried it on MY computer, but I wouldnt advise anybody else to try it.

I used a Mandrake installation CD to resize the NTFS partition. The freed space was converted manually to FAT32. Then I formatted the FAT partition using a WIn98 installation bootdisk, and then installed Win 98

For a simple reason: there is a great risk of losing the data in XP in case the NTFS resizing goes wrong. Of course, I have backups on CDs, so it wasnt a problem for me.

Moreover, you mentioned that it was your parents' computer. Hence I was a little sceptical about posting

Partition Magic works great to do a dual boot

You could try going outside. *gasp* radical. I know.

You could also get a new hard drive, install Win98 on it, and use that until you leave.

I havent had much experience with PM: can one resize the very partition from which the program is being run?

For most partition programs, even if you could do it I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I made a reall mess fooling around with that one day.

Partition Magic will boot down into a DR-DOS environment (like DriveImage) after you set up all the options in the GUI of Windows.

Hmm, I've never resized the system partition, and it hasn't done that to me, but I could see the necessity of it rebooting into a DOS-like mode to perform operations relating to the primary partition. Anyway, I wouldn't trust Partition Magic, not only on any critical data, but especially not on your parents' machine. Just tough it out, or get some newer games that work with Windows XP (as most everything except for the really old and weird ones do). Or go outside.

FWIW, if you do make the bad decision to resize your partition, you'll have to make sure it's fully defragmented first. And even then you'll have problems with Windows 98 overwriting the MBR, and stuff like that. Please, do not bother with this.

I concur, if you screw up your parents machine you will probably live to regret it. Hey I like games too, but partition resizing on the system partition is usually pretty messy, and installing windows 98 will royally screw up Win XP's master boot record.

If I were you, I would go and buy a new Hard disk and install win98 and play the games
n0cmonkey has already suggested that, though.
