Because the rest of us are the real gaming generation. I bet you've never played Rainbow Six, and no I don't mean Lockdown.

But yea, we're cool us and you

I hear it clearly, I'm almost 29. I've always had good/accute hearing though.

Referring to the 15khz one, I can hear the 16.5khz one too, but it's fairly faint.

One of those sites suggested headphones, so I gave mine a shot. Labtec Icon-750's. They make a high pitched whine up to about 19HKz. At 20KHz though, the frequency shifts down a bit, and they start to make a weird buzzing noise too, but at a higher pitch than my speakers made.
I guess most companies don't see much market though in making audio equipment that can produce sounds that their customers can't hear.

Goldwave - one nice feature is its audiograph thing.
Under the Tool menu, select Control.
It might be default, but if not, right click the area below the controls and select Spectrogram.
Right click again and select Properties. Make sure it's set to Automatic Full Frequency Range and that Show Axis is enabled.
Now when you play a file, you can see what frequency or frequencies are being produced.

I'm pretty sure I have played Rainbow Six. I know I've read the book.

Of course, I'm 38 and my ears have been trashed by countless rock concerts, nights in bars, military training, and girlfriends/wives.
and don't forget the buzzing of your sex toys. that kills off hearing too. :Q

Ouch....nice burn...

16.5KHz. Assuming your speakers can even produce that frequency at all.
Produced courtesy of Goldwave's function evaluator.
They've got a fully functional demo version. Try it out yourself and make your own high frequency whines and other fun noises.

I think you are the first frequency snob in the history of the world. Congrats on that.

it's not very high if you ask me. tone was a Bb (b flat), though it might be a or b, since my piano is three years out of tune.

so where can you buy the ring tones?

I cant imagine them being able to make tunes with this high a pitch.

I thought I heard it go higher a little bit. I can hear both this and the 16.5Khz tone quite easily. I can also hear some electronics squealing, too.

Strangely enough, these high-pitched tones only play from my big towers, and not my upper cubes. I guess my mains are good up to a very high frequency.

I'm 24.

I can hear some dog whistles, so yes I can hear it just fine. I'm 33 by the way.

I can hear well above 16.5KHz as well but my crappy speakers can't reproduce sounds that high so I honestly can't say that I "heard" the second one..

I think I just gave myself a headache from listening to that ringtone and the 16 kHz one. Those make you want to rip your ears off.

If someone's phone had that ringtone and it went off, I would beat them.

I hate that friggin sound. I think they used the same frequency in those electric mosquito repellents. Also sounds like an old monitor being over refreshed.

I picked up a really nice used 17" flat-screen CRT a few years ago...after about a year it started making that noise, only louder. It drove me absolutely nuts. I think I threw it on the concrete a couple times before tossing it in the dumpster. On an LCD now and will never look back

15 hurt a little but 16.5 felt like my ears were gonna start bleeding, OW! I'm gonna have to load those onto my mp3 player and mess with this at work.

can you describe the sound?

it's the sound your tv makes when it's on mute.
