Could be, but I really doubt it will happen that fast.

We're still part of the commonwealth. The Americans will probably have to buy us from Britain! just like they bought Alaska from the Russians!

I don't know if Canada and the US will ever become one nation. But I think it is a step forward to have us become closer to each other. I mean I think Canada is a great ally to have and I sure bet that Canadanians think the same about us.

What does canada taste like, you ask. Tastes like chicken!!

<< Canada is a great ally to have and I sure bet that Canadanians think the same about us. >>

Most of my friends are canadian, and they constantly rag on the US.

They think that they have a completly different culture, like they are not westernized or something.

This article was a little slap in the face.

Just as long as they improve both of our existances with such a merger and not make a cluster out of both of our existances. (Not saying it would be Canada's fault but more than likely our own and I'd rather not see us bring them down with us)

How's the article a slap in the face? If you've studied Canada-U.S. relations you'll know that for more than a hundred years, a North American union has been talked about.

Also, define what a North American union is? Do I think that something analogous to the E.U. will be setup in North America in my lifetime? No doubt about it. That's exactly what the F.T.A.A. is.

Do I think Canada will somehow be swallowed by the U.S.? Fat chance. What would you want in us that you can't already have?

The National Post was started by a disgruntled millionaire - disgruntled so much so, over the fact that our Prime Minister wouldn't allow him to be knighted, that he has since decided to renounce his citizenship and become a British citizen. The paper is like a conservative think-tank who's neo-conservative Canadian Alliance experiment has crashed and burned. They've had to face the reality that the federal Liberals are largely conservative where Canadians want them to be and nowhere else - an extremely politically fruitful mix in Canada. Articles like these that pop-up are just little pot-shots at the federal Liberals.

Mabey its the other way around.

Bad idea. I never want Canada to become a part of the US, or the other way around. On the surface we may have exactly the same cultures, but when you look a little deeper, they are quite different. And let's not even start on the Judicial and Legislative structures, which are really far appart.

A common currency and more open border might not be a bad idea (I don't know, I am not an economist), but one country? NEVER

From what I've heard from economists who favour a N.A. currency, it's in the best interests of Canada to adopt a more stable currency - and of course this would be the U.S. dollar. But not now. Of course, the trillion dollar question is when. We have to wait for our dollar to start rising because you don't want to adopt a currency when yours is worth substantially less than the new one.

On the short term front, Citibank has bet that the Canadian loonie will outpace the American dollar and gain some ground. On the long term front, economists predict that simply by adopting the U.S. currency at the right time, Canada's economy would grow by 37%.

Something for you American investors to think about. If you've got a small amount of money to throw at a potential windfall down the road, look for a good long-term Canadian prospect.

OR, to stabilize the economy. We have a country that depends ALOT on government leadership. what the government is doing now is ok IMHO (reduce the debt, re-organize health care - NO TWO TIER FOR GOODNESS SAKE).

However, they fail to really put any money into companies that do R&D, which is where everything starts. We don't need to encouraging resource exportation, or anything like that (especially considering the Americans were complaining about our lumber industry being subsidized so much), if we can do the manufacturing up here! you then have 2 industries. Of course, you still need to make sure everything is environmentally sustainable (lumber, water, fuel, Power).

Canada needs to look out for itself if it's culture is to survive, and if people here at all care about what the future of our world is going to be like.

You cannot compare canada and america.

You can compare mabey NYS or California to canada.

<< Get in mah belly! >>

LOLOLOL

But i don't it's going to happen within 10 years... we'll see how bad our currency get, but most likely 20 years or so before we even share the same dollar (how would Cdns feel about giving up Queen Elizabeth on the $$$ and replacing it with Washington? Or how the hell would the Queen feel about being replaced?). Personally, i wouldn't have a problem with that, and would probably actually welcome that day (but i never given much thought to what i'll lose... if anything).

Bah, that seems to be the past times of a lot of Cdns i know too. But our culture are sooooo similar, it's almost impossible to differentiate them. Really, how do you tell the difference between an Ontarian and a New Yorker? Not freaking much if any.

<< On the surface we may have exactly the same cultures, but when you look a little deeper, they are quite different. >>

What are the differences?

And what about states like Hawaii... i imagine those cultures are much more different than the general Canadian culture.

I would view this as further marching towards unified financial governments. I see it breaking down into at least three camps:

1) American (which includes South, Central, and North)
2) EU (all of Europe)
3) Asia

I think that people and governments are now waking up to the realization that it markets and finance that determine your country influence, and less so on military might. Can't afford a well-equipped military if you can't pay for it.

I was surprised recently by two facts on the US dollar:

1) At least 9 (maybe more) countries use it as the official currency.
2) Two-thirds of all US dollars printed exist outside of the US.

Well that would be one of the ways of stopping from getting all those Canadian coins. THEY WON'T GO IN THE VENDING MACHINES!
