Bringing up gay marriage is political suicide and will never happen (and would quickly be overturned in a future election). People voting for the Conservative party is mainly socially progressive and fiscally conservative. The deficit will decrease as Canada moves out of the recession and into a steady growing economy. Canada is the country that faired the best by far in and out of the recession.

Get ready for the removal of the gun registry for sure though.

Harper pulls his shit early on and people forget about it by the next election.

I don't know about the deficit decreasing. EVERY Conservative government in recent history has grown the deficit. Especially when he cuts the GST to 5%, prompting the IMF to label Canada as having a structural deficit problem.

Canada's performance during the recession is due to the policies enacted by the Liberals in the '90s that Harper couldn't change (despite repeatedly voting for bank deregulation).

Can't wait for my $10k TFSA. I can quit work by that time and live off my tax free capital gains. Or I'll keep my job and use what's left after tax to buy ice cream!

The liberals just got slaughtered. To my knowledge, this is the first time in history where they aren't sitting as the official opposition. Iggy didn't even win his own riding, and Toronto voted in a Conservative! A very historic vote indeed. So much for their divine right of kings attitude. Dalton McGuinty, you're next.

So what's the point of an opposition now?

Opposition still gets to table legislation. We'll see how good Layton is at politicking to see if any of it gets passed. We'll also see what he can do in Quebec, forming policy, and coming up with a real platform (it's easy to promise the moon when you have no hope in hell of being elected, but he just may next time around).

Yeah, I'm personally better off too, at least financially. Oh well.

Why most of you guys are busy trying to show how much Harper sucks, the rest of the country is awakening to find the NDP ahead of the Liberals in 2 seperate polls and even ahead of the BQ in Quebec.

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/d...als+into+second+place+Poll/4657970/story.html

Depending on which poll you follow, one has the Conservatives at 34%, with NDP and Liberal tied at 24%, another has the Conservatives at 43% and NDP 24% versus Liberal 21%

The main problem is that the Liberals have shifted more and more towards the left since in the past decade starting the decline since Martin took over (the Chretien government for all its fault was actually fairly fiscally conservative and paid down the debt quite a bit). All this talk in recent years of carbon tax and coalition government has destroyed the Liberals in the eyes of centrist Canada. Not to mention the Liberals have had incredibly weak leaders. Dion? Ignatieff? Bob Ray? Trudeau's son? I hate Layton and how two faced he is and would never ever vote NDP, but he is quite a strong leader and politician. I think Layton is running the strongest campaign by going directly after Ignatieff rather then Harper. People who won't vote NDP he will never get, but people who won't vote Conservative he has a great shot at wooing in, which he is doing.

The Liberals are in shambles, and simply don't get that shifting further to the left is hurting them much more then helping. The Liberals are in strong danger of becoming an irrelevant 3rd party. The best part of this is that while the left is trying to push ABC (anything but conservative), it may actually give the Conservatives their much fantasized majority.

Are your conservatives more left wing than Obama? I don't really consider it a loss for liberal idealolgy that harper won. A Canadian conservative is about the perfect balance IMO.

A Canadian progressive conservative is a good balance.

The CPC is a bunch of anti-woman yahoo cowboys. We should be in for a good time now.

This is the fiscally responsible party that managed to turn a surplus into a deficit immediately upon taking office.

39% of the population is retarded, and now we all get to live with it for five years.

Happy to see the Conservative majority. Even happier to see the Bloc pounded. I'll be home in Montreal for the first time in years to see a daughter graduate, and the Bloc swept away as a force will make my visit extra happy.

You do realize that's complete BS, right. The Conservatives ran surpluses until 2008-2009, which was the start of the recession

And don't think for a minute that the Libs or the NDP wouldn't have outspent the Conservatives.... and put us even greater in the hole.

How do you figure that? The Liberals did spend 13 years not outspending the current Conservatives...

I thought we were in deficit sooner than we were. I do feel they did everything they could to squander the good fiscal position we had, and have made poor decisions whenever possible - starting with rolling back an income tax cut (in the lowest bracket - i.e. applies to everyone with a job), to cut the GST.

I've got no problem with stimulus spending, or even with deficits, but this government is insane. BTW the G20 cost 4-5x the total spent on adscam If you're going to fuck your country, fuck it big.

Harper's speech was gracious and inclusive, He remains a Canadian and my Prime Minister so I have a faint hope for the best.

Of course I'm disappointed at him cutting "now witness the power of this fully operational battle station!" out of his speech.

It's a little too late, but is there something I can read up on to find out what the actual platforms of the parties are?

Is that at least 167 for the conservatives? That's even more then the 154 i thought they'd get a month or so back. That's got to sting.

Sigh... more years of Canadian Bush. Hopefully he will use his mandate to abolish the monarchy and not concentrate on imperialistic Arctic ambitions.

Oh noes what are we going to do about it Cow? What's your reasonable and measured response this time? American bombs dropping in Toronto or just a trade embargo?

Response to what in particular? Canadian aggression in the Arctic? If Canadians become aggressive in the Arctic, then why would the US and other countries not retaliate in kind?

Whatever it will be, it would be much milder than your advocation of bizarre beliefs in all-out genocide.

You're off to lying again. Remember, I've never supported genocide, but you've actually said you think London should be bombed because of Britain's response to the BP oil spill crisis. See how we're not really comparable. Anyway, you seem to prefer it when I ignore you so your wish is my command.

Sorry, but I don't ignore anyone on this forum.

The problem with your statement is that you have narrowly defined genocide to exclude what many would call a genocide. Nevertheless, I still don't know which specific act you're referring to in particular. Dealing with the Queen? Or Canadian aggression in the Arctic? Or Both?
