Bringing up gay marriage is political suicide and will never happen (and would quickly be overturned in a future election). People voting for the Conservative party is mainly socially progressive and fiscally conservative. The deficit will decrease as Canada moves out of the recession and into a steady growing economy. Canada is the country that faired the best by far in and out of the recession.

Get ready for the removal of the gun registry for sure though.

Harper pulls his shit early on and people forget about it by the next election.

I don't know about the deficit decreasing. EVERY Conservative government in recent history has grown the deficit. Especially when he cuts the GST to 5%, prompting the IMF to label Canada as having a structural deficit problem.

Canada's performance during the recession is due to the policies enacted by the Liberals in the '90s that Harper couldn't change (despite repeatedly voting for bank deregulation).

The liberals just got slaughtered. To my knowledge, this is the first time in history where they aren't sitting as the official opposition. Iggy didn't even win his own riding, and Toronto voted in a Conservative! A very historic vote indeed. So much for their divine right of kings attitude. Dalton McGuinty, you're next.

Opposition still gets to table legislation. We'll see how good Layton is at politicking to see if any of it gets passed. We'll also see what he can do in Quebec, forming policy, and coming up with a real platform (it's easy to promise the moon when you have no hope in hell of being elected, but he just may next time around).

Why most of you guys are busy trying to show how much Harper sucks, the rest of the country is awakening to find the NDP ahead of the Liberals in 2 seperate polls and even ahead of the BQ in Quebec.

Depending on which poll you follow, one has the Conservatives at 34%, with NDP and Liberal tied at 24%, another has the Conservatives at 43% and NDP 24% versus Liberal 21%

The main problem is that the Liberals have shifted more and more towards the left since in the past decade starting the decline since Martin took over (the Chretien government for all its fault was actually fairly fiscally conservative and paid down the debt quite a bit). All this talk in recent years of carbon tax and coalition government has destroyed the Liberals in the eyes of centrist Canada. Not to mention the Liberals have had incredibly weak leaders. Dion? Ignatieff? Bob Ray? Trudeau's son? I hate Layton and how two faced he is and would never ever vote NDP, but he is quite a strong leader and politician. I think Layton is running the strongest campaign by going directly after Ignatieff rather then Harper. People who won't vote NDP he will never get, but people who won't vote Conservative he has a great shot at wooing in, which he is doing.

The Liberals are in shambles, and simply don't get that shifting further to the left is hurting them much more then helping. The Liberals are in strong danger of becoming an irrelevant 3rd party. The best part of this is that while the left is trying to push ABC (anything but conservative), it may actually give the Conservatives their much fantasized majority.

Are your conservatives more left wing than Obama? I don't really consider it a loss for liberal idealolgy that harper won. A Canadian conservative is about the perfect balance IMO.

How do you figure that? The Liberals did spend 13 years not outspending the current Conservatives...

I thought we were in deficit sooner than we were. I do feel they did everything they could to squander the good fiscal position we had, and have made poor decisions whenever possible - starting with rolling back an income tax cut (in the lowest bracket - i.e. applies to everyone with a job), to cut the GST.

I've got no problem with stimulus spending, or even with deficits, but this government is insane. BTW the G20 cost 4-5x the total spent on adscam If you're going to fuck your country, fuck it big.

The problem with your statement is that you have narrowly defined genocide to exclude what many would call a genocide. Nevertheless, I still don't know which specific act you're referring to in particular. Dealing with the Queen? Or Canadian aggression in the Arctic? Or Both?
