I know its in my best interest, but I am just sick of the surgeries, however minor they are

Your body needs nutrients to fight this. I don't blame you one bit for being tired of procedures and doctors and prodding and surgeries, but keep your eye on the prize. Feel better soon.

Thanks guys. I was only down a half lb over the entire weekend. No talk of a feeding tube, so yay for small victories.

The miralax finally kicked in and I did my thing last night. 7 days and 18 hours after the last one. yeah.. wow. Amazingly it didn't smell like death.

I'm sitting here now eating cantaloupe and it tastes great. It still has flavor which is awesome and its cold and soothing. I feel dehydrated but am drinking lots of water so no idea what is going on there. I'm going to stay home from work tomorrow and just veg out.

Today I had an oncology appointment after radiation. My oncology doctor said I look and feel better than 90% of the people at this stage in my treatment. The cisplatin really kicks the crap out of some people but I appear to be handing it better than most. In fact, he said he looked at a 39 yr old guy earlier today (I'm 40) who has the same type cancer I have. His neck is all red, he has a feeding tube already, is nauseous all day long, doesn't want to eat, is miserable, and has numerous tongue/throat lesions from the radiation, whereas I appear normal to everyone and you wouldn't know I am on radiation/chemo unless you asked or I told you. I guess that's a blessing that I'm "strong like bull", or at least a really good faker.

Your bowel activity may be hugely decreased due to the opiates and pain killers. Unfortunately, that's a big side-effect of those drugs. You may need to force down a fiber supplement daily and add in a non-stimulant stool softener. And maybe even take a stimulant laxative every other day. Don't let yourself get stopped up for seven days again. If you really NEED to resort to the stimulant laxatives then so be it.

yeah, I know what is causing it, but I have been taking stool softeners, 4 pills every day and finally resorted to the miralax. I was told I should be having a movement every day or 2, but I'm not eating as much food so in my mind, I'm not creating as much waste. Is this a valid train of thought?

I'm still passing copious amounts of gas, just not having any substance...

Decreased input will get you a couple days without defecation but anything more than three is due to decreased bowel movement (peristalsis). Try taking the Miralax every other day and a bulk-forming fiber supplement every day (psyllium husk).

I would advise you ask your doctor before taking fiber supplements or stimulant laxatives.

The medical industry is good at fixing a broken bone but very bad with chronic diseases. They are too quick to chalk everything up as 'anxiety' and send people on their way with meds.

Given your symptoms you should have had an MRI/CT scan with contrast long before you were actually given one instead of just being prescribed meds.

I like to skip family doctors and go right with specialists since my insurance does not require referrals. They generally do a better job at getting to the bottom of things but they are far from foolproof. Plus if you do happen to get an MRI or CT scan from a family doctor the specialist they refer you too is just going to want to do another one anyways... wasting time and money.

Family doctors are more likely to just run bloodwork, prescribe meds, and send you on your way.

Sorry to hear about your situation, OP. When people get symptoms like this I find they need to demand the appropriate tests and do some googling of symptoms even though those with anxiety will tell you 'not' to google symptoms and accept what you have been told by the doctor if they say you are 'fine'

Big day, big update. My tongue has developed sores along the sides where it rubs my teeth. Pain meds don't help much, so I've been swishing and spitting this lidocaine? concoction, but its not helping enough, so.... Today I had a feeding tube put in. I weighed myself at the office before it was done and I was at 219 lbs. That's down from 262. You do the math. With this tube, I should be able to stop losing weight and start getting energy back.

Monday is my 2nd round of chemo. Everything is still on track. The tumor is getting smaller every day. I had to have another mask made because I had lost so much weight, it wasn't fitting properly anymore to hold my head still while the radiation blasts me every day.

Hi Slag - Hearing tumor is shrinking is great news - the treatment is working. My Dad went through the same weight loss during treatment and beat it in the end ..so please keep your spirits up

Can you provide me a link to where you get it? "Not bad" I've found is extremely subjective

I'm sorry about the late reply. I'm on my phone so I can't put the link. I usually buy Amazing Grass from Amazon. Just type in Amazing Grass and their full brand will pop up. I get the Acai and Goji formula, because the bottle is full of antioxidants. Also, your getting healthy doses of fiber.

Lately, I've been doing a cup of mango, 1 1/2 cup of Spinach, 1 banana, 1 scoop of Amazing Grass and 1 glass of ice cold filtered water in my Nutribullet. It taste absolutely delicious. Amazing Grass can be a bit difficult to drink, but when mixed with other fruits/vegetables you can't even taste it. My bottle last for 2 months @ 1 scoop a day.

May I suggest a book. Have you ever read "A Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl? A psychotherapist who survived 4 years in a concentration camp he talks about how he believes man must have meaning in his life. When we have meaning we can overcome any obstacle. I believe that fighting cancer is the same. The people who have meaning in their lives are the ones that typically beat cancer. You can find the book on Amazon as well, or on your Kindle if you have one.

God bless and good luck.

I read the book years ago. It is a great read. Thank you for reminding me to pull it off the bookshelf and give it another go.

I had my 2nd of 3 chemo appointments yesterday. Everything went well. I'm putting 5-6 cans of ensure down my feeding tube every day now and drinking water is getting easier as I can barely feel the lump in my throat any more. It's just the sores on my tongue that hurt. I have these really cool lollipops that numb my mouth and make it numb for like 30 minutes which help me to eat and not have this thick mucus all over my mouth.

Overall, doing well. I've cut out all the lyrica and most of the narcotics. I take one extended release dilaudid every evening, but none during the day as helpers. So, I'm only taking the dexamethasone for 2 days following chemo, the famotidine twice daily, and anything for nausea I need and that's it. Nerve pain is completely and totally gone. Tumor is shrinking extremely well. I'm a happy cat.

Try some healthy smoothies and shakes using fresh ingredients, bro! Berries, pineapple, orange, mango, kale, carrots, broccoli, bananas, whey protein powder, coconut milk, honey, cocoa or chocolate, organic peanut butter or almond butter, chili peppers, cinnamon, et. al (that's not a recipe, just listing some ingredients).

Hell since you have a feeding tube, that shit don't even need to taste good!

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

been about a week since my last update. Um.. I'm down 50 lbs. Had a stomach bug and couldn't eat for a couple days. STill getting over that mess but feeling better. I have 12 radiation sessions left out of 31 total so I am on the downward slide, however, I have https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mucositis which sucks and I have lesions along the sides of my tongue and back in my throat. I'm sipping water, but 100% of my nutrients come through a feeding tube now. What else? Just living day to day right now and hoping the next couple weeks fly by.

Slag, make sure they check you frequently for Thrush. I got it after chemo and it stunk! Praying for you here!

Btw, after you use the magic mouthwash you should get 15 or so minutes of pain free time. A good opportunity to continue drinking fluids to keep up your ability to swallow.
