Okay, look, seriously, I understand that politics is nasty, and everyone slings dirt, but seriously, there are lines one shouldn't cross. To me, politics is the type of thing where you butt heads viciously, and shake hands with your opponent afterwards and respect them no matter what. Maybe I'm overly optimistic.

In any case, this, to me, clearly crosses the line, and it's downright ugly.

Candidate Compared to Hitler in Ad

Controversial ad links Granholm and Dems to Hitler

A newspaper ad targeted at African Americans and linking Gov. Jennifer Granholm and other Democrats to Adolf Hitler drew immediate and intense criticism from its targets and its potential beneficiary today.

Chris DeWitt, spokesman for the Granholm for Governor campaign, called the tactic ?outrageous? and ?repugnant.?

A spokesman for Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos also said the ad was ?despicable,? and said a statement denouncing it would be forthcoming.

Granholm and other Democrats highlighted in the ad appearing in the Michigan Chronicle this week have been staunch defenders of opportunity for African Americans, DeWitt said.

The newspaper ad features the story of Jesse Owens, an African American and gold medal winner at the 1936 Munich Olympics who became a supporter of the Republican candidate for president that year. The ad features photographs of Hitler, Owens and prominent Democrats like former Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

Adolph Mongo, a Detroit-based political consultant and critic of Granholm, supported the message of the ad Thursday, which he said is about the lack of respect black voters receive from Democrats.

?Nobody is saying that Granholm and Hitler are the same person; it?s just telling a story,? he said.

The ad, paid for by a PAC run by Mongo?s stepdaughter and employee Nataki Harbin, urges black voters to ?Say No to Governor Granholm in November.?

Mongo said it does not mean, however, that blacks should say yes to Republican Dick DeVos.

DeVos campaign manager Greg McNeilly said this morning there is no connection between Mongo or the PAC which paid for it and the DeVos campaign.

I really hate when people compare others to Hitler/Nazis. It gets bloody annoying and theoverwhelming majority of the time, there is a huge difference.

Any time someone does that, my respect for them drops immensely.

I don't like the tactic, but it is effective for getting attention.

Then again, it could end up being like how swift boat vets weren't at all associated with the bush campaign. Just saying that its happened before. Follow the money.

heres mongo's buisness website. He appears to be a hired PR gun for whatever side is offering the most. He seems to have republican and democratic clients.
Hard saying if he is trying to make the dem look bad by comparing him to hitler or the repub canidate by making him look like a smear artist

Seems like a real sleazy guy, this Mongo. Wouldn't shock me to find the money trail leading back to the billionaire running against Granholm.

The ad.

Since this goes with my other posting today (yes im really that bored)...

This is nothing even remotely new, its pretty low but nothing new by a very long shot. Negative political ads have been around for at least two centuries! Politicians around the time of the post Civil War rebuild era would be compared to being leaders of the Ku Klux Klan and such and you can find numerous other examples in the past where person A is compared to something big and evil. Everyone assumes that negative ads started with Johnsons "Flower Girl" anti nuclear war ad, but that was the one ad that showed that negative ads *got results*. This is why we continue to see a deluge of negative ads regardless of how terrible they could be, because it seems the average voter is ignorant enough to either believe in them or forget about the past right up to the previous week at election time to where they could be swayed by one. It would be very un-first-amendment to say that people should vote a specific way, and it would also be to say that politicans should not produce ads where they compare others to Hitler/Pee Wee Herman/Barney the dinosaur.

The problem is they will continue to be shown because they are still very effective because of *controversy*, i.e. the recent PSP ad might generate alot of argument about racism but Sony could care less... they could'nt buy that kind of attention otherwise (It's all over the news here! Try that with a normal ad). Everyone pays attention to the car on fire at the side of the road, bonus points if its an exotic car, but they certainly wont pay attention to the Ford Escort in the right lane...

First off... I think it's ridiculous to make these comparisons to Hitler. As soon as I see the "Nazi" or "Hitler" bomb dropped on a particular person I know the person using that reference has lost their grip on reality.

That said, I find some of the responses in this thread interesting considering the passive acceptance of the term (or flat out use of the "H" bomb) when applied to the current administration.
