I have debt

Future presidential candidate...
You do sound just like Obama - he has debt too....

who doesn't have a debt today in US? average US citizen is over $180,000 in debt - money couldn't be payed off...

Remember those factories in Poland and Germany:

WORK MAKES YOU FREE

there no one will have any work related stresses....

Hope OP is doing better after the holiday weekend. Get a little space from the situation even if its only a few days or even hours.

I too am going trough a bunch of work stress but its stress that I am putting on myself ultimately because I see an end to the means. I may not see a light at the end of the tunnel yet but at least I know light exists.....

what kind of outlets do you have OP? when was the last time you felt happy about work?

Here is few things I learned over the years (they are easier said than done, but it takes practice/work).

a) start using the "off work" button. Learn that the second you step out of your job, you no longer think about it.....EVER. I've let my job get to me and my family/personal life WAY too much when I was younger. It was stupid and didn't accomplish ANYTHING (quite the opposite). When I step out the door I press the "off work" button and I don't think about it the job until the min I step back into the office.

b) don't do to little and don't do too much. I have never been to a company that appreciated and rewarded hard work, quite the opposite actually. In many companies (including my current employer) I've seen people that work the hardest get treated like crap/no reward or advance.....while people that do nothing/don't do great work etc get a raise/advance and even be considered better employees. It's fucked up/not fair and backwards....but that's the corporate world for ya. Obviously this doesn't apply to companies that got their shit together and do it right, but be careful. In the past I've seen people go UP AND BEYOND (including myself) for their companies.....and got burned doing so # of times. It's not worth it.

c) just laugh. You will see SO much fucked up shit at your job that will blow your head/make you think and wonder. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ANY OF IT......Just laugh. Whatever happens....just laugh. This was by far the best advice EVER given to me in my 3 careers and 12+ places of employment. This will not only keep you sane but also add some humor to your work life.

d) do NOT dedicate your life to your job. I see people make this mistake A LOT (especially now days). Employers LOVE to force people to work unlimited hours and dedicate their life to their job. They will threaten you etc to get to their goal. DO NOT fall for that crap. Put in your 8 hours and go see your SO/Family and have a healthy lifestyle. Job is just a small part of your life that enables you to live, but it is NOT your life.

e) don't get too close to people at work/no friendships (perhaps inter office ones). More people know about you, worse off you are (when their act stops or they want to get ahead). I have a tendancy to get close to people/relate etc and it has ALWAYS ended up hurting me in the end....when people show their true color (it can take weeks/months or even YEARS). Just come in, do your work, be friendly and get on with your life.

If you don't follow these steps not only will it effect your life, it will effect your HEALTH in ways you can't even imagine.

most tech jobs want you to be on call 24/7 and/or be able to support systems and apps that are 30 years old

keeping everything straight makes it almost impossible to get work out of your head

This is very well said.

I'm not sure what the OP's original post said, but most tech jobs are very stressful. Generally working for larger companies is less stressful but IMHO less rewarding.

Not even sure how to respond to B. Other than to state that it's horrible advice and certainly a good way to be seen as a mediocre employee. I'll say this I do a lot of extra work at times for my company but only in the right situation - one that benefits me and the company. At 28 years old I've managed to make far more than most of my peers due to that and the extra work I specifically put in last year led to me getting stock in the company something only the c/vp team have and the Directors above me don't have. Now I work in sales so it makes difference but all that extra work has led to good opportunities. That doesn't mean that some of the extra work went sigh unseen - that's life but I sure as hell would not have gotten ahead without going the extra mile. Now if you have a boss who isn't helping you get promoted - it's time to find a new job.

I also think you have C listed partly because of your approach to E. You sure as hell don't need to become best friends with people but it can be a valuable skill set if you can get your boss or other executives to appreciate you and like you. That can be a very valuable skill when it comes to work.

I agree and I'm not arguing ANYTHING you said (sounds right).

It seems like you have been employed at a decent company. Congrats.

Personally I haven't experienced that (yet, I hope). Just keep in mind I never said "be an asshole", for sure one should be nice/friendly to ANYONE they work with (not just CEOs etc).

I dunno. I only spent 12 hours at a time in the Hynix fab and believe me I was miserable every minute of the day.

Of course it could be simply that I wasnt able to sleep during the day.
Night shift sucks. Your brain doesnt work properly, you make a lot of dumb mistakes. You always have to come in early for meetings. Any errands you need done are gonna eat into sleep time. I hated it.

It's not could be, it's exactly what it was. I've worked 2nd and 3rd shifts and it took me a lot of discipline and TIME to adjust (2-3 weeks).

But once there, it was no different.

Simply a result of lack of sleep.

I actually find I feel more refreshed when I work nights. It's nice to be able to wakeup naturally and not need an alarm. Just that alone makes me feel refreshed for the whole day/night that I'm up. It's also nice to go to bed and actually be tired a bit, so I fall asleep in less than an hour. Day shifts on the other hand, and having to be there for freaking 7am... shoot me! Ugh, I always feel like total crap having to get up that early. Then I get a burst of energy around 10pm or so, good luck trying to go to bed when I'm at my peak.

Only thing with nights is I find it so hard to transition back to days. Starting my 3rd set of nights tonight, and after this set I start on days again, only 8 hour days though so I have to be there for 8 and not 7, but it's still going to be hard. Almost missed church yesterday since I slept through my alarm.
