So to counter the effects of the caffine, I had a sprite with a couple of shots of amaretto mixed in. after a few minutes my face felt really hot, itchy, and really funny. My wife came in from the kitchen with me a little snack and just froze.........................

She looked at me funny and asked if I was feeling ok, I said for the most part I was, but my face felt funny. She got her little compact mirror from her handbag and showed me my face. It was swollen and red, and I mean rudolf the red nosed reindeer red, and I looked like I just lost all 10 rounds with Hollyfield. My eyes were becoming little slits, my nose turned stuffy, and i felt like my face was on fire.

Well, i wasn't sure what had caused it, so i drank some ice water and after about an hour, it settled down, so I drank some more sprite/amaretto, and it started happening again. So I quit the drinking and stayed strictly with the ice water.

Woke up this morning and felt fine, face back to normal, and I threw away what little amaretto I had left.

I called the Dr, and he basically told me to not drink ever again, because I now run the risk of having my throat close up on me, and dieing a very painfull and slow way.

So, Ulfwald cannot drink anymore.

My condolences. Much the same happened to me with milk. So i know how you feel. But that emans i can't eat cheese, so no pizza And i was such a big fan of milk. No chocolate either.
But i really hope i'll never get allergic to alcohol, that'd be the day, i slit my throat

Just like alcohol, nature never intended for the human body to ingest cow milk... It?s really no surprise that an allergy could develop seemingly overnight either...

I quit drinking cows milk on my own a few years ago. No big allergic reactions, and I'm not vegetarian or anything. No more headaches though. I think everyone is allergic to cows milk in some small way. I do eat cheese though.

To the OP, it may have been the combination of so much sugar with the alcohol. Try beer. Or straight hard liquor.

That's what I was thinking- he might have a nut allergy. Those can be pretty dangerous so a doctor should be seen.

If it is a nut allergy, thank goodness he married a woman. :Q

It sounds like a Type IV hypersensitivity/allergy. A person can get sensitized to something anytime in life (the mechanism is similar to people who are allergic to penicillin). I agree with what others have said in that your allergy may now be to nuts (could be alcohol, just get the simple skin test done), but you should really see a Doctor (i'm just a student), especially with the holidays coming up (it seems everywhere has a bowl of nuts). At least avoid them. The next time you have a response it will be more serious so you should have epinephrine just in case.

update...,

Well, i tried it with just plain beer, Icehouse to be exact. and still same reaction. So on another night, i tried Scotch and water, more reaction that I care to think about. Nose running, eyes watered, basically worse than with the amaretto.

Ok lst night, 1 shot of Crown Royal. same reaction. Looks like the partying days are over for me.

You are much better off anyway. Alcohol is expensive and causes trouble. Quitting = win + win.

I really never drank that much, or that often. Maybe the occasional beer at a lan party, or an after dinner drink with the wife.

Well, at least I can still make my favorite beer can chicken.

The thing to try is some high-quality vodka. I'll go out on a small limb and suggest it's impossible to be allergic to ethyl alcohol (difficult for an antibody to stably bind something so small), but an allergy to all the other stuff (like the congeners that are in great part the cause of hangovers - scotch and beer are loaded with them) is likely. Vodka tends to have the least of these contaminants, but some are still certainly there. Note that your intestinal flora (the bacteria in your gut) produce small amounts of alchohol.

Ulfwald, this has happened to others I know. My mom's reaction is different: she can have a glass of wine or one beer, but just one glass will leave her with the most massive of headaches, every time. It begins about 2 hours after drinking, and lasts 12~18 hours:Q

I thought it was almonds... but anyway, I agree... most likely allergic to nuts - a fairly common allergy among the life threatening ones.
