Damn....and I just got an XTi as well. Could there be any new lenses coming along as well?
Of course, specs are sketchy at this point, but here's what our last report had: 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor measuring 22.5 x 15-mm, 5fps burst mode, integrated anti-dust cleaning system, 2.5-inch LCD, and DIGIC II image processing.
Still not FF

The new lens that is strongly rumored to be released alongside the 40D is the 18-200 EF-S f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. The 40D is also rumored to support 14bit RAW files just like the 1D MK III. This should give it a usable ISO 3200, and an ISO 6400 (via custom settings).

that's the xti.

35 mm sensors could cost anywhere between $50 and $1000 according to the canon whitepaper i read the other day. an APS-C sensor would be significantly less expensive. not only is it less than half the size, but semiconductor equipment can't make a 35 mm chip in one pass (it can make an APS-H chip in one pass, which is why canon uses them in the 1D.)

anyway, i'm guessing 12 MP, 3200 with 6400 available sensitivity, deeper buffers, etc. D200+ territory.

If it is droppping in at $1300 like some of the rumors have said, then I will be seeling my Rebel XT (and maybe my Rebel XTi) and grabbing one immeditaely.

If it has more megapixels than my 20D but the same sensor size, I must wonder if my 20D will still have better high ISO performance.

I am trying to think, what would make a 40D good enough for me to sell my 20D?

It would have to go way above the normal tweaks. A simple increase in megapixels and anti-dust technology from the XTi would not be enough. If it were a FF camera for $1300, that would certainly do it! But I'm not betting on it.

I think some of the features from the 1D-MkIII might do it: Live View, some advanced new AF system with lots more AF points, etc. , DIGIC III processor(s), etc.

Otherwise, Canon still gives me no reason to upgrade from a camera I bought in 2004!

Hmm I'm still thinking 10MP is more likely. If Canon decides to try to pack 12MP into an APS-C sensor, well I really hope they get it right because that makes for some really dense pixels. I'd rather have 10 good megapixels than 12 megapixels of noise. But...we'll see.

If Canon put out a $1300 FF camera, I'd be tempted to add it to my bag, even though it's packed with Nikon gear right now. FF is not the holy grail for me--I love my D2H and Tokina 12-24--but I'd definitely give it a look to get back to the normal focal length and DOF of 35mm lenses.

Rumor has it that there'll be 2 FF cameras coming from Canon either this time or Q2 next year. One will succeed 5D; it'll 'probably and hopefully' have everything that 5D has + 1. Sensor dust removal tech. 2. In body AF correction 3. 5FPS! 4. higher pixel count.
On the other hand, there'll be a entry level FF camera that has certain limitations such as 1. max shutter speed of 1/4000 2. lower pixel count 3. I forgot the rest.

Well, these are plain rumors at this stage; however as Sony is coming out with their FF sensors, It's pretty positive that Canon will offer bargain FF cameras.

Hmmm...you know for shooting models or architecture I would prefer FF, but for most everything else I like the crop. Then again, my favorite thing to do these days is shoot models, so I guess I want FF.

the 1D mk iii has higher pixel density than the 1D mk ii n and offers lower noise.

maybe it will be 10 MP. whatever it is, i doubt a 20D mk iii is going to cut it with a D80 successor, D200 successor, higher end alpha, and EP-1 on the horizon (esp. the last 3).

the question is, does canon leave the 30D on the market to compete with the D80? i guess so. even though nikon's trick with the low-end was to decontent the camera, D40 was still a better move than to leave an aging 350D in the market, imho. canon doesn't seem to be very willing to push cameras into the low end (after pioneering the market).

they need to update the 1Ds before the 5D, i think. there isn't much room to make a worthwhile upgrade to the 5D without killing 1Ds sales. what with the 1D mk 3 coming out, i'm guessing 1Ds and 30D updates this fall, and a 5D update next spring.

maybe they'll put out an APS-H camera for the $1800-2000 level right between a 40D and a 5D mk 2.

I heard this from several forums and an ex-Canon rep. September 6th will be the official announcement/press release. Similar to the XTi, expect it to ship soon after the press release.
As with all 'rumors', take it with a grain of salt. As for me, this sounds credible.

Now THAT interests me. I had my 5D stolen last month, and intend to replace it. I will wait foir the 5D MK II or whatever - the sensor ultrasonic technology is some thing I want. After two years with the 5D, I can't go with anything but FF.
