I am trying to think, what would make a 40D good enough for me to sell my 20D?
It would have to go way above the normal tweaks. A simple increase in megapixels and anti-dust technology from the XTi would not be enough. If it were a FF camera for $1300, that would certainly do it! But I'm not betting on it.
I think some of the features from the 1D-MkIII might do it: Live View, some advanced new AF system with lots more AF points, etc. , DIGIC III processor(s), etc.
Otherwise, Canon still gives me no reason to upgrade from a camera I bought in 2004!
the 1D mk iii has higher pixel density than the 1D mk ii n and offers lower noise.
maybe it will be 10 MP. whatever it is, i doubt a 20D mk iii is going to cut it with a D80 successor, D200 successor, higher end alpha, and EP-1 on the horizon (esp. the last 3).
the question is, does canon leave the 30D on the market to compete with the D80? i guess so. even though nikon's trick with the low-end was to decontent the camera, D40 was still a better move than to leave an aging 350D in the market, imho. canon doesn't seem to be very willing to push cameras into the low end (after pioneering the market).

Rumor has it that there'll be 2 FF cameras coming from Canon either this time or Q2 next year. One will succeed 5D; it'll 'probably and hopefully' have everything that 5D has + 1. Sensor dust removal tech. 2. In body AF correction 3. 5FPS! 4. higher pixel count.
On the other hand, there'll be a entry level FF camera that has certain limitations such as 1. max shutter speed of 1/4000 2. lower pixel count 3. I forgot the rest.
Well, these are plain rumors at this stage; however as Sony is coming out with their FF sensors, It's pretty positive that Canon will offer bargain FF cameras.
they need to update the 1Ds before the 5D, i think. there isn't much room to make a worthwhile upgrade to the 5D without killing 1Ds sales. what with the 1D mk 3 coming out, i'm guessing 1Ds and 30D updates this fall, and a 5D update next spring.
maybe they'll put out an APS-H camera for the $1800-2000 level right between a 40D and a 5D mk 2.
