Canon SX10 IS

Just received a Canon SX10 IS which I plan to take to S. Africa next January. I have used the Canon S3IS, but the ne SX10 really provides a big jump in capability. The S3 had a 12X zoom, and the S10 has a 20X. I took a few shots to compare them. The S10 is a bit larger, but has a solid feel and a nice 3-in articulated LCD as well as the optical finder. Here are some side by sides:

One nice feature is on the lens itself - a calibrated guide showing the 35mm equivalent:

On my last overseas trip, I used Nikon's P80, somewhat competitive in features, but decidedly cheesier in quality and feel.

This little Canon SX10 will save a lot of weight and space when travelling, especially by air. The price was not bad - $379.99 including S/H.

<LOL> Actually, I might try 5.1 surround - got the EOS 5D and the Nikon P80 as well.

Anyway - here are two shots aimed at the same area - one the 28mm wide, and the other the 560mm zoomm, both taken from the same spot.:

jesus, that's one loong zoom range for a tiny camera like that.

and no TTM77, the len cannot be changed.

No - actually that is the whole rationale for getting this puppy - no need to haul around a lot of lenses when lugging beaucoup stuff on long air trips.

And, it doesn't do bad on extreme closeups either - a pair of HDD holding screws:

My sister was asking me for advice on what new camera to get to take pictures of her new baby and family during the holiday season. An SLR would have been too much for her, so I suggested the SX10 IS. She loves it, and I gotta say it takes some decent pictures from the ones she's been sending me.

I'm impressed.

I knew it was Arizona just from looking at the pics! I want to move back there . how is the temperature now? I really miss it there.

Yes - 4 AA's. I like that - that's what my S3 has, and it was easy to find AA's even at a kiosk on the island of Mykonos.

I haven't run into any noticeable lag yet. That is my biggest complaint on the Nikon P80 I took to Portgual laast June. Sometimes the lag woul be extreme - like several seconds.

For Sonicice - high today will be 86. Low last night was 49. Best time of year!

Is there any reason to really get the SX1 IS over the SX10 IS other than 1080p video and CMOS/CCD sensor difference? The SX1 is $140 more than the SX10.

The only specified difference is the 1080p video capability. Sine I don't do any video at all, it not compelling to get the SX1 IS.

I just got the new Lensmate 58mm threaded filter adapter - connects to the lens using the hood's interrupted thread mount. Here it is with a 58mm circular polarizer. Very useful.

The same adapter will work for the SX1 - same lens.
