Can't boot from external HDD

I just bought a docking station for connecting a standard HDD to my laptop. I can open it fine in Windows Explorer, but booting from it doesn't seem to work. I have tried both with USB and eSata.

When trying to boot with eSata, all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. When trying to boot with USB it gets through some of the intro animations but then I get a bluescreen and restart. Safe mode also produces bluescreen. The HDD itself is bootable, I can boot from it on my stationary computer without problems. It has Windows 7 installed on it.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Different computers with different parts. Windows doesn't like massive hardware changes. Just because it will boot with one computer does not mean it will boot with another (unless they are exactly the same).

What brand of laptop. Example - Lenovo T series requires F12 selection for odd ball boots. That pops up a BIOS menu listing the avialable choices. That's how I boot my Thumb Drive.
