Hey everyone!
Well I'm relatively new here, but I've been having a persistent problem probably since I can remember. I'll give the low down on my specs and how old each piece of hardware is to maintain a contiguous atmosphere.
Processor: Intel Pentium IV 2.4GhZ (around 2 years old, but doubting that this is the problem.)
PSU: 400w (Just as old as the processor, but I'll explain below why I've come to think that this may be the problem.)
Video card: Radeon 9800 Pro (5-6 months old tops. Fan is working just fine on it. Gets relatively hot during gameplay, but that's expected, no?
RAM: 1 GB of DDR333 PC2700 (Can someone guide me to that program that tests it over a certain period of time. Just to knock this possibility out right away.)
Andd that should pretty much cover the basics. Didn't list mobo as it's pretty much brand new and has caused no problems in any way. The problem is that running a graphically intense game such as Battlefield 2, I'll be playing for 10-20 minutes (sometimes even more), and the computer will just...stall. It's hard to explain, but the monitor goes black and everything inside seemingly dies out (except LED lights, including on the Mobo.) It leads me to believe that it's overheating, because something like temperature is never consistent and varies greatly, which corresponds directly to the fact that it never turns off after a set amount of time. It may do so after loading a map, firing a gun, or it may not at all. However, I do usually get roughly 20 minutes max playtime before it cuts off. Someone told me not too long ago that the problem was likely a faulty power supply. I hate to invest in a new one without fully researching what the problem might be. Could I be overheating in general? I opened the case and stuck my room fan directly in front of it to excessively cool the damn thing, but to no avail. Is the processor too hot? The CPU fan seems to working normally, and gets pretty decent speeds. I get similar results with the case cover on and usual ventilation. I'm baffled. Any suggestions out there? Are there programs that test these pieces of hardware that I don't know about? If there's no set advice, which piece should I replace that is MOST LIKELY to be the culprit? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, or if you need more information of any sort, reply back with said request. Thanks in advance!
