Capturing video with 7800GT

I'm thinking of transferring some of my old VCR tapes collection to DVDs. I wonder if you could help. I have the 7800GT card with ViVO. Do you think I could use it for video capture? I mean, I know it's possible but is this card good enough for this particular purpose?

My second question is software-related. Which program would you recommend? I was thinking about Pinnacle Studio Plus version 10, good choice?

Is it good enough?? It is, arguably (barring Multi-Card setups) the fourth fastest card currently in existance (behind GTX, X1800XT, GTX 512).

Simply connect your VCR, using component jacks, to the VIVO crossbar. Get a video capturing program of some sort and just start recording it onto your computer. You then, however, would need to encode that recorded file into a DVD Movie format, so it would be best to get a burning program that can do it for you.

Thank you! I was just in some doubt because I've heard people saying that the special stand-alone encoding card is better than 'graphics accelerators'.

Well it will probably have better IQ. Nvidias purevideo helps a little bit with deinterlacing quality and what not, but it still wont give you the IQ that a stand alone card will.

It will work perfectly fine, and deliver pretty nice IQ, just not the best.

Well you may get some minor artifacting around some letters. Some really small letters may become slightly distorted, some general deinterlacing, and filtering. Once again, nothing major, especially with technologies like AVIVO and Purevideo. A video card is good, just a stand along will be better. It isn't between goo and bad.

Having typed that, i realized you may be asking what IQ stands for. In which case it is Image Quality

Yes, i actually have Pinnacle Studios editing software. It is pretty nice. I have never used their cards so i cant comment unfortunately, but they are a fairly well known company, so i dont think you could really go wrong. However, i would highly recommend looking at the Hauppauge cards (PVR-150 is newer than the PVR-250 contrary to what you might think).

As for software for video editing, many dont like it; but it does what i need: ULead DVD Movie Factory. However, can be buggy for some systems. If it works :thumbsup: if not then your stuck with it
