the lights were on for 2 days...any chance I won't need to buy a new one?

why don't you just go charge your battery and find out? how should we know when you don't say what kind of battery you have.

if it still works at all after a charge, its still damaged. lead acid batteries just get damaged when totally discharged.

sorry, should've included that info. I jumped and drove around for like 20 minutes and idled it for a few on top of that and it didn't start up again after I shut off the car...

Get a new battery, lead acid ones are damaged by a full discharge, thats not what they are meant for.

Damn, sounds to me like its gone. Would you still have warranty or anything? If you got the batt from like a pep boys or something they might give you a new one.

Was angry when I posted. The ac hadn't kicked in yet and the room was still hot. Its still hot but now I have a

The battery in my Trans Am completely discharged while it was being stored for the winter. I told my parents to start it and run it for 5 minutes once a week, but of course they didn't . Anyways, there wasn't even enough power in it to keep the alarm light flashing. The dome light didn't even flicker when I tried turning it on. I put it on a 10 amp battery charger for 4 hours (until the charger showed "full) then fired it up and drove it to school. That was about 2 months ago, and I haven't had any problems with mine since.

Put the battery on a charger (not just a jump) and see what happens.

You can get one anywhere. They have them at all auto parts stores, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, etc. I have this one but anything with a 10 amp charge rating should be sufficient.

Or, you could take the battery to an auto parts store and have them throw it on their charger.

Do a trickle charge and leave it overnight.

I agree, but even if it lasts you all summer, winter will kill it.

Trickle chargers will work too, but will take quite a bit longer. You can get a small trickle charger for pennies. I have a little 1-amp trickle charger that I got somewhere for $8 that works OK, but was too slow for me.

heh, discharging is damaging, but not so damaging that it won't hold a charge at all after. it just reduces the total life of the battery by a decent bit

A medium quality battery is expected to last 3-5 years

If you have had the car for close to that time anyhow, replace the battery as stated above.

True. It was probably on the way out anyway, and this full discharge just stuck the final nail in the coffin. A newer battery might have survived, but after they become a few years old, they become quite sensitive to severe discharges.

BTW, a little info:

Sears DieHard has switched back to Johnson Controls, away from Exide as thier OEM, so DieHard should be good once again.

WalMart Everstart has switched to Exide away from Johnson Controls as their OEM, so you can't buy a decent battery for cheap at WalMart anymore.

(The four major auto/truck battery makers are Delco, Interstate, Johnson Controls, and Exide. I've had more trouble with short-lived Exide-made batteries than any other OEM.)

I had a battery completely discharge on me coming up on 2 years ago now, and it's been fine for me.

Find an Interstate werehouse. This is where the trucks, that supply batteries to all the retailers, pick up their batteries. That way you won't get a battery that's been sitting on the shelf for a year or two. My last Interstate lasted 9 years and cost $76 to replace ($6 extra for the next size up, 1000 cca). BTW, I did a deep discharge in those 9 years, twice, and it kept on going. Coulda got 11 years otherwise.
