My car check engine lights stayed on even after I make sure that the gas cap is tighten (the gas cap door was ajar after a fill up). Disconnect & reconnect the battery cure that problem, save me the hassle of taking it to the stealership.

I save a bit of money as well today by converting my car loan from 8.45 percent to 6.xx percent at my bank. Going from $388 * 41 months (originally was 48 months) to $366 * 36 months. The saving should work out to be around $400~$500 because more money go into the principle as the time go by. (I can pay off the car cash but I feels that I would earn more with stocks investment).

I will be checking with my other banks to see if they can beat the rate that I'm currently getting.

PS. Percent % is not working for me.

This is a strange thread, it's like the one I made in which I was asking for advice on which tv to buy and in the second part of the thread mentioned that a neighbor's kid had been devoured by a feral dog.

Anyway, take the car to autozone or advance auto parts and ask to have the code checked to see what's going on, probably a sensor or cylinder misfire.

I agree. It's a very odd thread.

You can get a free scan from many auto parts stores. Wait till the light comes on again and go get it checked out. Unplugging it to clear the light isn't 'saving you a trip to the dealer' because the problem is still there. It doesn't magically fix the problem.

Gas door was ajar, and that is what triggered the engine light.

If the engine light go on once again, I'll take the car in to a mechanic shop for an early oil change and repair if needed. The car is like new and only have 26,000 miles.

What kind of car is it?

Cap, not door...sheesh!
It was odd that the check engine light went on after the gas door was ajar.

The engine light went on for a while then shutoff by itself when I took it out for a drive today. I'll check & replace the air intake filter in the morning to see if that help, and next step is to get the local parts store to run an OBD test to see if it is the O2 sensor/s that is the problem.

Thanks all for the input.

PS. Performance (sensor) Warranty has expired on my car.

yes, it happened to my wife and several other people I know. The EGR system throws the code.

Not the EGR, the evap module. Gas evaporates in the fuel tank and creates fumes, which are collected in a charcoal cylinder under the hood until the evap purge valve sends them into the intake as an extra bit of juice. If the fuel filler cap is not closed, the system will not work and the code is thrown, causing the engine light to turn on.

Most modern vehicles have two "engine" lights, or two modes of the same light. If it comes on solid, it's an emissions problem (fuel door etc.) and it will not pass inspection, but it's not necessarily damaging, and it might go away on its own (e.g. fuel filler cap). Completing several drive cycles (car on, drive enough to warm up the catalytic converter, car off) will usually reset the light if the problem is not sensed again during that time. A flashing light means a bigger mechanical failure that should be fixed immediately.

I when to 2 part shops today and they will not do OBD test for me, but they can sell me one for $150~$300 CAD. Bosch Universial O2 sensor is $150 each, and Bosch OEM sensor is $290 each. And, I ordered an air intake filter, because it seems that I cured the engine light trouble by shake out the dust in the old air filter.

I don't know what other states took away the free scan and/or clear but auto parts stores in California aren't allowed to do it anymore.

I bought a basic OBD Code reader for $35 at costco. I came with a book of trouble codes. The more expensive units give you code info on the display.

Government at its finest. Code reads are free here in FL at any parts store or mechanic.

I'm thinking of getting myself a ScanGauge instead of an OBD reader if the check engine go back on.
