Guess it depends on the region, but mud happens even if you don't go looking for it, or deep snow or sand. Larger tires even if not true flotation size can help a lot. That also allows airing them down while still being able to safely support the vehicle weight.

I think there's just a stigma about taking a $100k car off roading, however it's not like you're doing aggressive rock crawling or mudding, probably just lightly pitted dirt and forest roads.

I've got an acquaintance in socal who has a G wagon and takes it out to Joshua regularly off roading.

I know that area and have been off roading there between Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. We explored near some of the old mines and did some shooting. There are rocky and sandy “roads” out there that we mainly stick to so any decent truck based 4x4 should be able to handle it without much trouble. Some of it can be a little challenging though. I wouldn’t take a car based SUV off roading there even if it was AWD.

This was last October out near Ludlow, CA. We drove across a dried up lake bed and through some pretty rutted trails. This spot was probably 6-7 miles from the town of Ludlow. Ludlow is literally an exit with a gas station, a diner and an auto repair shop. We drove north off the exit into the desert all the way up to the train tracks where my friend in the Ford F-250 got himself stuck in deep sand. Took him 3 hours and the help of some friendly off roaders to pull him out and then we drove south to this spot where we spent the night.

The guys I am off-roading with, one has a Ford F250 4x4 that is completely stock...

And why wouldn’t you take a vehicle like this off-road? It’s what they were designed to do.

... my friend in the Ford F-250 got himself stuck in deep sand. Took him 3 hours and the help of some friendly off roaders to pull him out

I rest my case.

A wrap is not all that bad an idea if going through highly abrasive sandy areas.

Well, we keep telling him to lift it and get some bigger tires but he’s a stubborn fuck.

The Tacoma TRD Pro didn’t get stuck and I didn’t either in my rented F-Pace Jaguar. Oh man is that ever not the vehicle for this sort of thing though.

Update: I bought a 2022 GX460 Premium. It is pearl white with ecru (light beige) interior. I only go in to the office a couple days a week so the abysmal fuel economy doesn’t really bother me.

Can’t wait to take it off road. Probably not going to do that until October though as it is too hot out in the desert during the summer.

I thought about the 4Runner but a TRD Pro is going for over $60k right now because dealers are marking them up. I basically got this for the same price.

I like the white. Don't wrap it.

Thanks, I like it too. I’m not going to wrap it but probably will have it ceramic coated.

I keep toying with the idea of a mild lift and a set of off-road wheels/tires but I really don’t want to sacrifice the current ride quality, which is very good, or increase road noise which is also good, it is a quiet ride and fairly luxurious.
