Case Western Reserve University

My brother is going there in the fall, and apparently these are the recommended computer specs:

3GHz CPU
1 GB ram
120 GB hard drive
64MB video card

Is the board getting kickbasck from Intel or something?

How much is it? I disagree about affording school -> affording a PC. I value education enough to take out loans. I don't value 200 FPS in Q3A enough to take out a loan.

Don't go there -- cleveland will be SO DEPRESSING, as will be CWRU.

CMU is far nicer, and that isn't saying much!

That's a <$1000 computer, nothing special by any stretch.

For sure. Just get an AthlonXP2500 and a decent mobo, and you'll hit 3000 speeds no problem, and probably 3200 speeds.

Interesting, that is <$1000, but I'd hardly call it entry level.

cpu: $200 intel, $120 athlon XP, $200 athlon64 (pricewatch cheapest)
motherbord: ~$75
HD: $85 (newegg cheapest)
1GB RAM: $195 (newegg cheapest)
64MB card: $20

If I were building a PC for myself, I'd go ~2400, 512 mb, 80gb, and a ~$100 card.

Cleveland's not so bad... just hit up the flats every once in awhile. However, CWRU is nerdville USA, and is kind of depressing. I would just show up with your 1GHZ PIII w/256MB RAM and say you never got the memo.

well i guess it depends on your 'kind' of people.

i visited a friend their and got him to transfer b/c he was miserable.

on a friday night, we had to walk 2.5miles to find the one party that was going on anywhere near campus, there was a 4x1 guy girl ratio and the girls are notoriously ugly, it's been ranked i think they are 2nd worst looking girlsfor a college.

now, we were walking around campus, on a friday night, there was NOBODY out. I'm not kidding, in the two hours we were out nobody was freakin outside, it was beautiful weather!

All there is to do is play ping pong in the dorms, have fun. Unless you like to play like those role playing games and the dance dance revolution..constantly and that's all other people will be doing, then yes oh and studying on a friday night.

nobody has their door open in dorms, people just sit and download porn/play computer games all day.
basically, imagine the geekiest people you know at your school and it's all of those kind of people in a college.

to top it all off, one of the frats was having a root beer kegger. :/

now I know people that go to case and are happy there, well relatively with all the work, but they are complete geeks/don't go out/play those role playing card game thingies..

if that's you then knock yourself out.

cost is >32K i do believe. but they give you a lot of scholarships which reduce the overall cost.

however, its sorta a small school, known for medicine. has some great buildings, completely wireless, one of the fastest internet connection for any campus, and is a beautiful school, but it is for geeks, and nurses.

My first post =), long time lurker, finally decided to post. I go to CWRU (just got done with my first year) so I gotta defend it haha. For all the people saying that CWRU is all nerds and so forth you are exaggerating. There's fun people at Case among the legions of nerds. As for people leaving their doors shut and being hermits, my floor was nothing like this. My floor has been written up countless times for being too loud, alcohol, weed, etc. It got so bad that our RA had to call a meeting to tell us that we were deemed "The Shithole" of the school lol. So basically to Ctho9305 just tell your bro to make the best out of the situation. As for the topic at hand, the recommended specs are way too high, to quote my roomie who actually went out and bought a setup with these specs, "I paid $1200 just to use AIM." My only recommendation would be to get a huge hard drive because your bro is gonna be connected at 1 GBS and well there's gonna be a ton of stuff to get lol. Towards the end of the year I was desperate for HD space and I have a 120 gb HD =).

A few years ago when it came time to choose colleges I got into a few...

CWRU offered me a full ride. Instead I chose to move out to Southern California for a one-quarter ride to a ~$38k private engineering school.

I'm glad I made the decision, although if I had gone to Case I could have come out with no debt and a crapload of nice things instead of crappy things and enough debt to choke a horse.

case does have a badass network. Imagine kazaa except only used by geeks who only have high quality mp3s and movies. then also figure you are on a searchable GIGABIT network. 700mb svcds download off the network in minutes.
