Cassette tape to MP3 conversion

I need to convert several audio tapes to MP3s. How do I do that? I assume there is some method of playing a tape to a sound card's audio input. But from there, I need software to record the input, digitize it, and save it to an MP3. Is that correct? What software can do it?

Any basic sound recording software would work to capture the .WAV file, just play the tape in a boombox or walkman or whatever, to the input or mic-in on the sound card, then a wav to mp3 converter program to finish it up.
There is probably a better way to do this, however this 'would' work.
