cat 5 cable problem

I am having a weird problem with a cat 5 cable that I made.

I run it through a tester and all of the connections are ok but when I plug it from my computer to the switch that is hooked into the modem it does not work.

The internet service works becuase i try a cat five that I boutght somewhere and it works.

All of the wires in the cable are hooked exactly the same order as the store bought cable.

Also as soon as I plug the cable I made into my computer the "network cable unpluged" message goes away.

Clip the ends and do it again. The tester you have doesn't guarentee against shorts and the like. If that doesn't do it, try a new length of cable, perhaps there is damage between the ends.

we tried cliping the ends and adding new connectors.... we also tried a whole new lenght of cable.. neither worked.

make sure you dont need a crossover wire...

never fvcked a crimping. i'm 10 for 10 working cables

Try crimping the connectors harder. Make sure push the wires as close to the tip of the connector as possible.

we did screw one up but when that happend the tester registered that.

perhaps you're cutting too deeply when you strip off the jacket then. I assure you there is no magic secret required

be sure the individual wires are undamaged from stipping the jacket, be sure they're fully into the connector, and the pins are fully pressed into them after crimping

mine are wh-or/or/wh-gr/bl/wh-bl/gr/wh-br/br

It doesn't really matter which way they go as long as both ends are the same.

Unless you're trying to comply with the standards, then it does. Use 568a or 568b for all your cables http://www.siriuscomputers.com/rj45.htm

Yes the order matters...
it happened to me...i couldn't figure out why either..until i called the tech guy from where i bought the cables and was told that i need connect it according to the standard.

To clarify what I meant, it doesn't matter which way they go as in either my way or walleye's way. Walleye listed the 568a and did the 568b. As long as you stick to one you will be fine.

Edit: by sticking to the standards you are making sure the twisted pairs go where they should. If you put the wires any which way it should still work but you may not get 100mbit speeds.

we changed the order around..


It was the same on both ends before so I dont know why......

I does not matter any more cause I have internet again.
