Cat 5 splitting?

My in-laws are moving into our basement and they have finished it. The contractor seems to have gotten confused and put a phone jack and coaxail jack by where the computer should be. The coaxial should have been a ethernet connection.

I talked to the contractor and the wire is a CAT 5. My question is, can CAT 5 wire be split up and put onto a wall plate with a phone connection and ethernet connection? If so, any idea what wires to use?

You don't want to do this. It's possible, you'll only get 100mbits, and throughput will suffer like crazy. You REALLY don't want to put a POTS phone and ethernet in the same CAT5. But - if you must - 1 and 2, and 3 and 6.

Yes it can. Is it a good practice? NO! Keep in mind if it is not a home run wire to the closet there is no way it will work.
You need all 4 pair for gigabit. pulling a pair out limits you to 10/100, and even that is out of spec with the other pair being used for communication.
If you can't pull another wire, here is how to work it:
Terminate the cat5 jack on pins 1,2,3,6 per the standard of your choice, 568 a or b. Use the blue pair or the brown pair for voice.

It's wrong and I don't condone it, but yes you can do it. I am not responsible for any problems one may have by doing this.

*SHUDDER* is correct. You can do it, it will work. gig is out. We did this back in the late 80s...not a good idea. If you are really that hard up for pairs then sure you can do it. Just don't come crying why things are flaky.

There's always cordless phones. They are pretty good these days. As much as I used to hate them, I don't use a single wired phone anymore.

id bitch out the contractor and make them fix what they screwed up by running a new wire or replacing the phone jack with an RJ 45 (assuming the other end is usable)
