I trim my cat's claws often, so he can't hurt much. That's a good thing, since he seems to like using me as a scratching post while I sleep

That said, I do think that declawing a cat is humane considering the alternative of giving it away to a pound where it's likely to be euthanized.

Just because it's on the intarweb doesn't make it true.

In many European countries the practice is forbidden under the terms of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals[2] , unless there is a medical indication for the procedure, or a veterinarian considers it beneficial to the animal.

Some European countries go further, such as Finland, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland[3], where declawing cats for non-medical reasons is always illegal under their laws against cruelty to animals.

EXACTLY! Hell....if you gave me a choice between my nuts and my fingertips, I'd have those fingers lopped off in the nearest paper cutter I can find.

here's a list of other vets who think it's bad

http://www.declaw.com/list.asp

http://www.avma.org/issues/pol..._welfare/declawing.asp

and here's a list of studies done on it.

So, Spidey, the first site I linked to was an anti-declawing / selling crap site. So what? want me to keep pulling up 'real' sites ?

Section 8: Prohibited Practices

Article 22.

1 Animals may not be maltreated, seriously neglected or needlessly overworked.

2. It is also forbidden:

a. to put animals to death cruelly;

b. to kill animals for amusement or wantonly, especially by using tame or captive animals for target-practice;

c. to organize fights between or with animals, in the course of which the latter are maltreated or killed;

d. to use live animals to train dogs or test their aggressiveness, except when dogs are being trained or tested in an artificial burrow, under the conditions prescribed by the Federal Council;

e. to use animals for exhibitions, advertising, film-making or similar purposes when this plainly causes them pain, suffering or injury;

f. to seek to rid oneself of an animal which depends on human care for survival by releasing or abandoning it;

g. to cut off the claws of cats and other felines, to clip or prick the ears of dogs, to remove the vocal organs or employ other methods to prevent animals from giving tongue or reacting to pain in another audible manner;

h. to administer substances designed to stimulate the physical capacities of animals for sporting purposes (doping).

We had a cat declawed and they showed no sign of serious pain or psycological disorderes. He could still climb trees, fight and jump onto the roof of our house.

It's ILLEGAL in Britain, Germany, Switzerland, etc etc. There's a REASON it's illegal. That is what I'm saying. It is bad. So you beat me at looking crap up on the internet. I'm not writing a god damn paper on it.

ATOT is full of assholes.

Since you're so internet savvy, why don't YOU look up the animal acts on their respective governmental websites? I'm sure it would take you all of 10 seconds :roll:

Canai, I'm not trying to be an ass. But seriously, don't post propaganda and expect it to be taken at anything less than "less" than face value. My main point is just because you read it on the intarweb or can google up something cannot replace personal experience.

My kitties are declawed, I didn't want to do it but had to. You will find some of the happiest kittys there are.

Do you own cats? If so, how long?

Yet you have no issue severing the head of a horse and leaving it in my bed. :roll:

But Johnny Fontane was perfect for that role!

That's true. It was just the first result in google I found some good links after looking a bit more.

But I've had cats my whole life. My current one is 3 now, and still has all his claws. He is busily doing the best he can to prevent me from typing right now.

First off if your cats has to be outdoors to have fun, then that says a lot of it's environment.

Some have had to declaw all four paws in order to live well with a cat (IMHO saving a cat > letting it be euthanized).

It's extremely important that declawed cats stay indoors...if your cat is bored get them a friend...my cats enjoy being around their brothers...some like solitude.

Anyway pets belong indoors, this ain't the 19th century anymore.

A toddler would love to roam outside as well.

I own 4 cats, 1 is declawed (he came that way when I adopted him), and he has trouble running downstairs because of the declawing. When he tries to screetch to halt while running, it's like watching a car with failing brakes.

.22 to the cats head will help.

Seriously though, don't declaw the cat if you are going to throw it outside. Otherwise, if it'll stay inside, don't stop at the claws, knock the whole legs off. They'll be just as useful.
