hi, some of you might remember, but i adapted a cat about 2.5 weeks ago. (yeah, i decided to keep it).

it's 2 year old male. so far it has adjusted to new envirnoments pretty well and seems like its comfortable (sleeping on my stomach and such.

however there is a problem.. there is a strong odor in my living room.. it smells like an old sock of some sort.. and its not the smell from his litter box. his litter box is in the wash room and when he does his "business", the smell is different.

someone suggested this is due to "cat in heat" and the smell is from its sperm... and said that spaying it would fix the problem..

is this true?

if any of you can give me info about this i would really appreciate it.. should i go with the operation anyways(since some say its better for the cat)?

Your cat is marking his territory with his smell.

The only way to keep him from doing it is to get him neutered.

my cat starting started spraying about a year ago... for no reason- never did before... but all the sudden he started. So we had him nuetered and switched to a new kitty litter in his litter box. After that he never sprayed again.

Once he has started spraying you can not count on neutering stopping this 100% ! Often times males will still spray afterwards !

That probably is it. Please get him neutered anyways, the last thing we need are more cats in the shelter waiting for a home.

Extract a sample of your cat's sperm and sniff it to determine if the scents are simliar.

Someone who tells you stuff sounds like an idiot.
1) sperm does not smell from inside the body.
2) Males do not become "in heat" that's for females.
3) You spay females, you neuter males.

I'd almost be able to forgive this person if they thought your cat was female, but then where did the sperm thing come from?

Anyway.. who calls thier pet "it"? My cats are "he" and "she".

Go ahead and get the little guy fixed. There's no guarantee it will stop the spraying, but chancees are good that it will.

Cats should be neutered before they start the habit of spraying. Heavy clean up for you...try keeping the cat in another room after neutering. A gradual introduction back to various room while being supervised should help. There are also chemicals to use to treat areas of the house that the cat doesn't like...hense will avoid those type of chemicals. You will eventually win...good luck.

:disgust: Sounds like he's spraying territory to me...get him fixed pronto before the habit becomes too ingrained.

My 2 boys are fixed and they don't spray anymore.

Gosh, I don't know whether they spray urine or sperm. But the fixing seems to remove the drive to do it, so who knows?

Cats are mysterious...

Ack! Our kitten (well, cat now I guess) just sprayed for the first time a few days ago. Time to get the little guy fixed I guess before it becomes a habit for him!

Snip, snip!!!

Need to look up the vet's number in the morning.
