Well, I was at the roadshow in NYC a gew weeks ago and that's the number I heard there.

Of course, the person I was talking to may have had it wrong, so I don't plan on putting my hand on a bible about this.

ok, i'm curious now. i did a google search, and found this article from 2 1/2 years ago saying there were 5000 ccie's at that time.

ah...9000 active ccie's, but the # assigned to each ccie should be over 10000 now

The average fail rate on the CCNA is 90% much less the CCIE. Probably because most people think they can take it and pass with a little experience.
Nice to have a CCIE goal but start with the CCNA, then CCNP. Get your CompTia A+ and Network+ along the way.
There is some overlap on the MCSE. It's good to have too, although a lot of MCSEs are working as $10 hour phone tech help or are out of a job because the tech bubble burst.

The idea of a BS in computer science is better as an underlying goal as well

my 2 centavos, I have a aas in computer maintenence, got a+ certified right of the bat, 3 months at a crappy no pay job in Waco, TX. I know am a field engineer and have several Dell Certifications (spanning every single desktop, laptop and non-fibre channel available), IBM certifications, and basic Cisco internal certifications(basically means I can swap parts, but don't know anything about the NOS) I'll be taking a 3 month class to get mcse, while at the same time studying at home for the network+ and ccna. I don't get paid much as an A+, but I know a lot of mcse's with no hardware experience that got laid off over a year ago and have still not found a tech job, from either lack of experience or cisco certifcations. I'm do'ing the other certs (msce and ccna) just in case I get laid off, It'll help me in that I'll be well rounded, and in a better position to be an IT manager.

I would have thought it was much lower. I could be wrong. I often am.


But I'll tell you this...

It's about to get HARDER.

More simulator questions and they are moving some of the WAN protocol stuff from the old BSCN to the CCNA.

Not the hardcore BGP stuff, just things like single area OSPF.

The CCNA changed a short while ago and is not the same test that you remember taking even 6 months ago. Until Cisco gets it together, don't even think of taking that route for now. Even their academy is not fully functional to what it should be.

i don't think that the CCNA has a 90% fail rate. things are about to change though. netacad is comming into v3.0, which will drop the IPX stuff and incorporate things that are taught in semester 5 (advanced routing).

i took my CCNA on wend... and i had 15 WAN questions. considering most people i know who've taken that exam stated that there were no more than 2 WAN questions, i found this odd. right now, they don't have any OSPF, i don't know if they'll add anything in v3.0.

the sims are extremely simple if you had enough lab time. they recommend no more than 10mins, but they were pretty simple... i doubt you'll spend half that time.

The thing with the sims, and I don't think I'm violating a confidentiality agreement by telling you this, is that when you click on a host to telnet to a router, make sure you are clicking on one that has a dotted line running to the router.

The test instructions aren't really clear about this and you can end up wasting valuable time trying to figure out why things aren't working properly.
