It's been years since I did my CCNP exams, but I read over the syllabus and it doesn't look like much has changed aside from the addition of some IPv6 topics.
Instead of quantifying the CCNP as a difficulty, it might be easier to describe it as a time investment. If you're interested in pursing it, plan on spending at least 3x as long as you did on your CCNA. You'll also want at least 2 routers and 2 switches for a lab.
How far do you plan on pursuing a career in networking?
I agree that a lot of the topics are overkill unless you plan to work in a NOC or support large enterprise network. A lot of the technologies covered simply aren't required/don't exist in an small business network.
All that being said, you might also want to consider CCNA Wireless certification since it's a newer track and extremely relevant today.
