I have owned a yamaha 4416s 4x cd-rewritable drive for about three years. My question is, do burners incrementally lose thier capacity to burn with enough "strength"?
Example. Until recently, i have been able to burn even to cheap no name brand cd's, and have those cd's read in my plextor cdrom, burner, even in my car cd player when burned with music. I don't usually buy crappy cd's, but have in the past, and am pointing this out in particular to illustrate the point.
Recently i have tried to use, Sony, Tdk, and Imation discs, and they burn successfully, without a hitch, as is usual.
However, these successfully burned cd's, dont read at all in my plex cdrom, read 10% of the time in the burner, and may or may not read in the car cd player (refernce is to data for cdroms, and music for cd player of course).
Point being, that in the past i had luck even with crap cd's, and now i cant get a good burn on decent/to very good cd's (not that i get coasters, but i get unreliable reads).
So my question is, do burners burn less deeply as time goes on and they wear, is it the laser wearing out, or what is the process that is going on here?
Thx for the info, just trying to understand "how" my burner is dying. I'll buy a new one but was interested in this topic as i couldnt find anything on the net after a quick scour.
BTW, yeah, configuration is the same as when "all was good", firmware is up to date, termination is set, etc, etc...
