Hello,

Win XP Pro SP2

Recently built a new PC. Ran fine for a few days but then I started to get unexpected shutdowns. After research it appears the processor heated up. I installed a Zalman fan and the temp looks good now. However, during the shutdowns, I had to clear the CMOS to boot up. It would start to power up, all lit up, but the montior was black. I got past all of this.

However, I no longer see the CD drives in My Computer, or in Computer Management. In addition, when I go into Setup during booting, the drives are there. The CD drives open and close and the light comes on, so they have power. I also swapped out the first (brand new) IDE cable with another barnd new IDE cable and still does not recognize the CD drives.

Any help is appreciated.

Try disconnecting the optical drives (power and IDE).
Boot into Windows, then shut down, reconnect them, checking jumpers and cable inserted properly, reboot.

I gave this a try, but that did not help. When I look in Device Manager, there is not even a section for CD/DVD drives with the (+) sign, yet I checked again and they are seen in the bios.

Could you try just one optical drive at a time.
Try it on the same IDE cable as the hdd, then try it on a different channel.

Do the same with the other drive.

Actually one CD/DVD burner is connected to IDE to the mobo. The other drive is an SATA dvd/cd burner connected to an SATA PCIx card. I just realized that I am also having trouble also with the PCIx SATA card because I have several hard drives connected to it that are not recognized either.

Thus, the single IDE CD drive is not recognized, as well as the SATA devices connected to the PCIx card.

I have 5 other SATA hard drives connected direct to the mobo and all are working fine.

In Device Manager, I noted in "System Devices", there are some yellow exclamation makrs next to:

Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 3 - 2944
Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 4 - 2946
Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 5 - 2948
Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 294A

However, there is no yellow exclamation makr next to:
Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 2940

OK,

We'll try the obvious.
Disconnect all sata devices connected to mobo and pcix. Does the IDE drive show up in Windows?
(Which drive is Windows installed on, IDE or SATA or SATA/pcix?)

The boot drive is SATA. The mobo has 6 sata ports and 4 drives are connected, two ports are not connected to anything. Those 4 drives are recognized and working. I have removed all PCIx and PCIe cards. The mobo has 2 PCI slots, 2 PCIx slots, and 2 PCIe slots. The graphics card is in a PCI slot.

I have been spending hours upon hours on the net looking for a cause, and have found very little. Most instances that I find at least have the CD/DVD section showing up in Device Manager.

I copied the Asus setup disc from my network and ran the chipset update, but when I did it was so quick it appears it did not run. If I recall, when I first put the PC together last week and ran the Asus setup desk to install drivers etc, I at least saw it processing the update.

The README for the chipset shows:

The Intel(R) Chipset Device Software installs Windows*
INF files to the target system. These files outline to
the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset
components in order to ensure that the following features
function properly:

- Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
- PCIe Support
- IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
- SATA Storage Support
- USB Support
- Identification of Intel(R) Chipset Components in
the Device Manager

This is a new PC and all ran well for the first few days until I installed dual GeForce 8600GTS cards. Things started shutting down then and I needed to clear CMOS several times. After researching the net, I leanr that this video card has a problematic driver when using two cards with more than 2 monitors (I have 3). So I removed the cards, sent them back for a refund, and installed my older Matrox Quad graphics card. At the same time it appears the processor was heating up.

Since that time, all seems to run well. Once I got rid of those cards, cleared the CMOS, etc. However, during that day+ of problems, something got whacked that prevents not only the CD/DVD rom drive from being recognized, but also the PCIx SATA add-in cards for additional SATA drives also do not get recognized. If you recall, one of the DVD drives is SATA and connected to an add-in PCIx card. Not only is that not see, but the hard drives connected to it also are not.

I could understand the add-in cards issue as getting whacked, but the IDE cd drive does not make sene.
