CD-R & DVD-R/W Drives

This is driving me crazy. On the day I am about to get my SBC DSL up and running, my drives crap out on me. When I put a disk in either, (TDK VeloCD 10/24/40, or Pioneer DVR-105), the disc just spins.

The drives work fine in Safe Mode (XP-Pro), but i cant get them to work otherwise. I checked all the cables, jumper settings, and even updated the firmware.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could try?
