lol good work, though a little off topic. Mind you at least half the GH threads are.

Just don't go Coal on us...lol (if you don't get it...don't ask...it's a joke I think Rigoletto made in a thread some time ago..not really that funny out of context)

I'm 423 posts away from Diamond.
Damn it...so close...yet so far...

lol what's with the edit?

I've had good experiences w/Mitsumi Golds. Never had a coaster on (any) of them. Pricey but worth it.

I've just tried these new CDRs from PNY called "Black Diamond." Other than the 'cool factor' of being completely black, they do an exceptional job.

I find they all work fine. It's having a terrible cd burner that will lead to ultimate frustration. I've got about 20 disks on the wall (not to mention the ones I broke in a fit of anger)that failed due to a budget burner. I finally broke down and spent the $250 bucks on Sony. Not a single problem yet.

If you have all the variables figured out - good burner, software, system, and competence - then you should have no problems with even cheap media. Where you will see the difference is that cheap media will not (in my experience) "hold" onto data as long as decent media. That is, the data may corrupt or be unreadable for some unknown reason even after a couple of months. It's crappy to lose data for no apparent reason.

That's why I use relatively cheap media for audio and other stuff I don't really care about. I use good media for backups, mission critical data and so forth.

The real goal is to get good media at cheap prices.

Good media: Mitsui, Taiyo Yuden, Kodak among others.
Bad media: CMC Magnetics, Ritek, GigaStorage among others.

Note that many "Brand Name Media" outsource their cdrs/rws and you can get the same brand name media made by good and bad factories. Buyer Beware and use CDR Identifier when you can.

Good luck.

i have used and recommend Kodak, Princo, Mitsubishi, Sony, TDK, Sanity, amongst others. even some very dodgy ones that a mate gave me to burn something on worked perfectly. (i dont know what brand they were because everything on them was written in japanese or something)

bill_n_opus's last point was one you should keep in mind.

Nate,
I have been out of the loop for quite some time, but last I had heard, Fuji were a big thumbs down. As someone pointed out, CD-Identifier is the way to go. I have had Imation brand CD-R's that have been made from 3 different sources, Taiyo Yuden, Ricoh, and CMC Magnetics.... I try to stick with TDK, Imations that say made in Japan (Taiyo Yuden), Kodaks and Mitsumi's....

I stay clear of CMC magnetics because my friends cd player can't read them if I burn at 8x but it will work if I burn it at 4x.

I usually buy sony.
