Funny, I keep hearing that it's more "reliable" when ripping music to HDD and then back to cdr/w. While that may be true for many ... it doesn't seem to be true for me. Maybe it's my particular system I don't know. My comp sys isn't that old and i'm running a Plex 8432 and a Toshiba cdrom which is an excellent combo. I'm running a AMD k6-3 400mhz on an ASUS p5a.
Anyways, i've noticed that when saving tracks to HDD and then burning back to cdr/w is nice in that it takes advantage of DAO ... but I find that I get occassional pops and hiccups during playback/recording which really pisses me off. I don't know why this happens. All I can think is that my Nero 5.0 while saving a track overloads the cpu ... maybe. Shouldn't though.
However, when I do a copy on the fly option with Nero or doing TAO I always get a perfect copy - no problems, no audible pops etc.
So, that's my particular argument for having a complimentary cdrom ... especially one with very fast DAE. Besides, you will save your burner and make it last longer and get better performance since most readers save maybe for the very latest models will be outperformed by almost all modern cdroms in seek times, DAE and the like.
BTW, I don't seem to have any problems with non-music material though.
