I've got a Panasonic DVD-RV20 player that for some reason will not read CD-R's but WILL read CD-RW's. However, it will only read CD-RW's on the first burn, not after a re-write. Anyone know why the player will only read on or the other?

My guess is that it actually only reads cd-r's hence why once it rewrites it can't (laser) read the info anymore...

I think a problem could be the cd-r media you are running and how fast of a burn you are running...I think the faster the burn may result in less definition or depth of the burn and thus sensitive lasers may have troubles...

Example:

I can burn audio cd's at 4-8x and car player plays perfect...If I burn at 12x I get a lot of skipping or some playback issues. car player has anti-skip technology...Those same 12x cd-r's will play in my home cd player just fine, and my newer panasonic dvd player (rp-56)

Yes, player tolerance for border-line burns vaires greatly. My Pioneer CD changer will play ANYTHING, even things that can't be read by the burner that made them. But I have discmans that are very very picky.

I tried a generic "Durabrand" cd-r at 4x and it wouldn't work. I've got Imation cd-r's that I can also try, but both are the same "color" if that makes any difference. *Does* the color of the writable side of a cd-r affect the density at all?

It can... you want a good reflective surface for good reading...

Gold, silver and such are good colors. Blue/green aren't (even though my favorite cd's from verbatim are blue underneath and work in everything)

For the burner or the dvd player?

I say upgrade both ... new firmware "usually" will help with any problems ... and in some cases adds features that didn't exist originally when you purchased the device (ie. burner)

I don't know the Panasonic DVD-RV20, but if it's not a computer component then you problem is very common. Many DVD players can play CD-RWs burned on a PC but not a CD-R. You need to get a unit that explicity says it will play a CD-R. I know my Sony will not play a CD-R and it bums me out.
