Hello, I have a question. I have just recently sold a 4x cdrom to which I know to have been working in one of my computers. LET ME SAY RIGHT NOW that I am not accusing the person I sold it to at all of anything. However upon his recieving the cdrom, he tried it and claimed it did not work. He then pmmed me back saying that it would power on if you plug just the power cable in, but if you plug in the ide cable, it wont even power on. He has tried it on 2 differnet mobos with 2 different cables. Does this sound logical to you guys? Can it be possible for an IDE cable to cause power to not reach the cdrom? I don't know anything about IDE connections and the internals of cdroms so I honestly don't know, but I'd like to get a second opinion before I do anything. Thnx guys!

Because I would like to get this CD-ROM working.
Ive installed ALOT of CD-ROMS but I cant get this one to work. John says it worked before I bought it. Which I have NO reason not to believe him. He's post stands correct I have tried it in 2 differant computers and unplugged exsiting CD_ROMS to test this 4X but no luck. This cd-rom is old and I only paid $10.00 I think, so were trying everything to get it working because of such a small value.

It was made in 1993 if theirs anything differant from newer cd-rom drives?? Ive tried every jumper on the cd-rom also.

Is their any reason pin 1 and 2 on the CD-ROM would be opposite and the Red strip on the IDE cable would towards pin 39 and 40? Which Ive never seen if so?

Thanks!

Ok, let me ask this dumb sounding question. Are you guys sure it is an IDE CDROM and not one of the proprietary cdroms that ran off a soundcard?
I have seen IDE devices with cable plugged in backwards refuse to power up and also seen it stop the MB from POSTing. The good news, is that I have never seen cause any permanent damage.
What is make and model number?
I'd have to think if it really is an IDE drive, then it's bad. I cant see you plugging it backwards or off by a pin that many times without figuring it.

MrChicken,

<< Are you guys sure it is an IDE CDROM and not one of the proprietary cdroms that ran off a soundcard? >>

It has the 40 pin connector on the back. By the jumpers it doesnt have like normal cd-roms, Example: Master, Slave, ect. It just says ID 0,1,2 or 3. I tried all the settings.

It doesnt have a Manufacte name on it just the following is all i can find.

Matsushita
3Y02ADB06765
Novemeber 1993
Model CR-563-B
BPB
BPCS#730011

Thanks, When I get a chance Ill try to search some of these numbers on the web for more information.

***Update*** I just seen this while searhing the web.

MrChicken it seems your answer is correct, so it wasnt a dumb

Heres a link from someone who had problems with the same drive and a replay from someone else trying to help:

CD-ROM

This cd-rom does not use IDE, it requires a sound card with the correct interface to work. It's probably easier & cheaper to buy an IDE cd rom.

Is there anyway around this?
John did you have your IDE cable connected from the CD-ROM to the Motherboard or SoundCard?

Thanks!

Not unless you have an old SB16 laying around. I put the last one I had laying around in a 486, which I gave away.

Yep, I have one myself and dug up this link:
CR-563
even worse is that it is a double speed.
There were alot of soundcards that you could use it with, I think it uses the "panasonic" interface, not the "mitsumi" interface that was also on a lot soundcards.

Its nice just to have a old cd-rom laying around to use for trouble-shooting. I told john I was going to use this in a old Compaq 486 just to mess around with but it doesnt have a sound card.

IF i were to try and find a Sound Card. What would i need to make sure to ask for to make sure it would then support this cd-rom drive.

There you go theirs your answer if it doesn't have: MS, SL, or CS on the back of the cd-ron then it is an old sound card type cdrom drive and you have to get an old sound card that has the IDE Channel on the sound card in order for it to work! At the computer store where I work we have lots of those cd-rom drive laying around because we don't have any sound card to go with the Cd-Rom drives! i would recomend get a Cd-rom drive that doesn't reguire a sound card because the older ones can be a pain to set up!

A lot of old pre-1995 CD-ROM drives have proprietary Sony or Panasonic (Matsushita) interfaces. While they are 40-pin ribbon cables just like IDE devices are, they are not the same thing. You need to find an ancient sound card with a CD-ROM interface built in. A lot of old Sound Blaster cards had these.

Back when I had a 486, I had to replace my system's original SB16 because the line out jack stopped working. This was like in 1996, right before I got my first Pentium. The new SB AWE32 I picked up didn't have this interface (surprise, surprise) and I had to find that out the hard way when I couldn't get the stupid 2x CD-ROM to work on the IDE controller. So, I ended up having to get a new CD-ROM (shiny new 8x) too. Fun, fun, fun.....
