I'm planning on building my friend an everquest machine and he's given me a number of the parts, with include the following

2.4 ghz celeron processor
712 mb ddr pc2100 ram
60 gig hdd
Chaintech MP4M266A Pentium4 478Pin DDR266 Motherboard (533FSB) (Audio,Video,LAN)(Prescott Ready)
geforce fx5700 256 mb LE

what should i do to overclock this processor, aka what are the nominal hz ranges for the best increase, etc... just need somehelp.

This thing has a heatsink/fan the size of a freaking tank on it so i think it should run pretty hot.

That's really an awful setup for any kind of gaming, especially with an FX5700LE. Even if you did OC the Celeron, it'll probably still yield terrible gaming performance. The whole FX 5xxx series is terrible, as well. I'd suggest the following:

XP-M 2400+ ($80), which should overclock to 2400MHz (above the XP3200+) no problem
Speeze FalconRock ($15)
2x512MB Corsair Value Select PC3200 ($140) You want at least a gig for gaming, especially something like EQ, and PC3200 is usually the same price as lower speed grades while offering additional headroom for that XP-M.
80GB WD HDD ($60)
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra ($60)
Antec Sonata ($100)

Spend the rest of the budget on as good of a graphics card as you can get.

(EDIT: To clarify, I interpreted the first sentence as meaning your friend has given you a list of some parts that he thinks will work well. If he already has all of the actual parts, my condolences.)

The full name of the processor will actually be "Celeron D," not just "Celeron." It's also Prescott-based and has 256K cache, as opposed to the old Northwood-based Celeron with 128K cache (horrible performer in mostly everything).

In the event that the CelD + mobo gets to around $200, though, go for an A64 (you can put together a good S754 rig for that amount).
