celeron II in p3v4x

Can I put a celeron II 900 in a asus p3v4x anyone know? I already tried and get nothing. Then I notice on the retail intel box it says "it is electrically different and could cause damage".

Electrically different from what? With what are they comparing on the box?

Cco and higher steppings (all 900's are cdo) have a different internal power handling that is not compatible with the older mbs or bios'

Yeah... except in dell's case... they remod their bx motherboard to take those 700+ mhz celeron on fc-pgas...

only bios and electrical problem.. which means new mobo anyway..

Listen to Andy Hui, he knows his stuff. Your board just needs an updated bios and a late model slotket- some of the older ones don't support celly2's. Your board uses the late model via chipset, so it natively supports coppermines. Many older BX boards will support them, too, up to 1.1gig with the right bios and slotket. My old BH6 runs a 1gig CDO celly2 just fine- flashed the bios, set the slotket to auto- strictly P&P after that.

I used a generic slotket obtained with the processor from Augustustech. IIRC, it's a "super slocket III" that allows fsb adjustments but not voltage adjustments. Seems to be decent quality and has 2 plastic retainer pieces to hold it in the secc retainer. Like I said, mine's set to auto.

Anybody who wants a more full featured slotket should check with Soltekusa, these are getting hard to find. I learned of their unit only after switching the cpu on my bh6. It's not really necessary on overclocker type boards, though.

Got the MB running again with cel 466. Downloaded the bios Andy suggested. When I updated the bios it said "Warning - Bios model doesn't match" or something close to that. There was mention of "P4T". I figured it was ok since the P4T is a Pent 4 MB. I let it burn. It said it completed the job successfully. Now I can't get the machine to boot with either the cel 466 or the cel 900. What next?

I thought said you owned a P3V4X board, that is pent III via board, P4T is Intel 845 Pent IV board. I think you flashed the wrong bios to your board, you might try re-flashing the motherboard again but make sure it doesn't say P4T.

You seem to have flashed the wrong BIOS if it said P4T.

If there was an error prompt with the BIOS flash, you really should have come back here to ask for advice. As it is, you have a dead board, and either need to get a replacement BIOS or perform a hot flash.

I used the BIOS to update my P3V4X from your link AndyHui and it worked great for me, no P4T whatsoever....

Hot flash:

Go find someone else with a P3V4X. Turn on their computer, and while that computer is on, load up AFLASH and prepare to flash the BIOS. Just before you perform the actual flash, carefully replace the BIOS chip on the working motherboard with your misflashed BIOS chip. Perform the flash....that should over-write the incorrect BIOS. You can then put back the BIOS chip onto your motherboard.

You could probably get away with doing it on any recent ASUS board....you may not actually need a target P3V4X.

Be VERY careful performing the hotflash. If you have doubts, find someone who is experienced with flashing BIOSes.

I'll bet you're wondering why I wouldn't follow your link well... thank you very much microsoft. Between my post and your reply I upgraded my 5.5 ie browser for a 'critical' update. That fixed me up so I could no longer download anything. I tried 6.0 ie next. Still couldn't download anything, kept dying as soon as I clicked the link. I searched for the 1006_03.zip thinking that there was something wrong with the link and sure enough I found that exactly named file somewhere, can't remember where anymore. Still couldn't download it. Tried my other machine that I hadn't 'upgraded' yet and I was too lazy to wend my way thru to the link "read bonehead in here somewhere" and now the rest is history. So the moral of the story is: don't search google for 1006_03.zip, you'll find many that appear to be correct but are not. Use the link. If it says warning, be warned. Don't do the critical update for 5.5 or upgrade to 6.0 unless you hate downloading stuff.

Sorry to read of your misfortune. Do a search here and on Ars for "hotflash" you'll get lots of info.

Might also want to consider checking out Badflash.com, they've done right by me in the past. There are other flash services out there, just can't bring any to mind. Might be able to have it done locally, too.... Just depends on what you'd be more comfortable with....

Checked up on that "beta" bios, it's not really beta, just Asus' way of disavowing all responsibility... once you get it onto your machine it should be OK.

I just received my CeleronII 850MHz (cD0-step) and had it put in my P3V4X-motherboard.
Nice piece!
I didn't even try it in FSB=100MHz... Immediately FSB=133MHz - no problem, now im running it at FSB=138MHz which gives me 1173MHz - yeeehaaa!

So long stable (have had it for 1 hr...)
