I have never installed a cpu before so go easy with the lingo. My bro has a celeron 533 and wants to upgrade to a 700. How do I install the new 700 and how do I get the computer to detect the new cpu.

Depending on the system board...you can probably just buy a 700Mhz Celeron or P3 & plug it in.
Of course you'll need to "unplug" the current 533 Celeron.
(The system should simply adjust it's bios settings to the new CPU.)

Do you happen to know if the system board supports 100Mhz FSB? Hopefully your ram is also PC100.
Ram is so cheap today that you should get more ram anyway!

Raptor...

I am going to try to not get technical, so bear with me.

Do you know what type of motherboard your brother has?

Most motherboards are either socket370 (has a square usually white socket that processor plugs into), or Slot 1 is normally a longer connector (usually black).

Depending on what type of motherboard it is will determine the outcome.

If it is slot 1 motherboard, you have two choices. You might be able to find a slot 1 700 mhz, or you might have to get what they call a Slotket.

A slotket is in the shape of a slot 1 card and allows you to place one of the newer P3 FCPGA processors in it.

Good Luck

ps just let us know a little about the motherboard and if you know what the speed rating on the memory is.

Its an asus motherboard and I think the memory is pc 100 but what does the bus speed have to do with anything(not trying to be a pain in the ass, I just dont know)?? And where could I get a "slotkey", cause I wanna put his cpu in my computer afterwards OK thanks, and adding more ram, how do i do it and will the motherboard again detect it on its own?? Thanks

Do you have the Processor yet?? If you do what does it look like??

It will either look like a big chip (socket370) or very small card (slot 1)

The motherboard (BIOS) will detect the RAM and the Processor all on its own. If there is a manual for the Motherboard it will tell you what kind of RAM it can take.

The FSB or "Front Side Bus" is the Mhz that the Motherboard "bus" is running at (basicaly) You should be aware of this when selecting a processor and RAM.
Some processors run at 100Mhz bus others run at 133Mhz. This works the same way with RAM (ex. PC 100Mhz, PC 133Mhz, PC 150Mhz) If you do not plan to Overclock its a good idea to keep the Mhz rating the same.

As far as installing the actual processor and RAM all you do is take the old one out and put the new one in. Read the instructions that come with the product if you are unsure. (be carefull of ESD)

The manual for the Motherboard should tell you everything you need to know, If you don't have one or can't find it, Look it up on line. Asus is usually good about that. Good luck.

First what is "ESD"?????Sorry Newbie and with the ram, I was under the impression that I could just add it and not have to take the old one out, I thought they add together or something. Most computers got like 3 places(sockets or whatever it is called) to put the ram in, I thought I just put it in another "socket" and it will add up?? And what is the difference between 16*64 and 16*72 ram???? "Laser" sorry had to do it, thanks for all your help guys
