Cell phone causes speaker feedback?

So heres the deal, my roommate recently installed a pair of Altec-Lansing VS3121 speakers. Well, for some screwed up reason whenever anyone in about a 1.5meter radius uses their cell phone the speakers start putting out the static. The onyl problem I can think of is that for some reason something isn't sheilded correctly and one of the wires is picking up a signal, but considering the brand and that they're pretty decent speakers I wouldn't expect this problem at all. It doesn't happen with my old BA speakers. So whats it sound like to you guys? Did my roomie just get a pad set? Or is this actually a common issue with this model?

It's signal interference. Happens all the time on my set, but only when the cell is in use.

Probably picked up through the speaker wires not the speakers themselves. The more wires you have, the more potential sources of interference.

I don't think there's too much to do about it, unless you want to shield all those wires. I'm sure someone knows a better way.

Edit: And it's not feedback. Feedback is signal that loops from source to output and back to the same source in a way that the signal grows in strength with each loop.

That's not uncommon. Once I was talking to my roomate and he said, "Hold on a sec, I'm about to get a call." A second later his phone started to ring. I was amazed until I realized that his speakers emit a very low hum when his phone is in use.

That's funny, I use it the same way. I game with headphones that seal out most noises, so when I hear the clicks, I know to pause cause I have a call coming in.

It's the same deal that makes those cell phone accessories flash when a call comes in.

Well, thanks guys... seems stupid that the wires aren't shielded enough but oh well.

The sleeves only pertect the wires from damage or by some chance pertect someone from eletricution. It does not protect the frequency from intereference.

nextel phones (motorola) are notorious for interfering with speakers of all kinds.. and will eventually cause permenant damage, lost a pair of computer speakers because of it, has something to do with the operating frequency.

my verizon wireless phone (also motorola) doesn't cause any speaker problems..

Yeah, my coworker has Nextel and when he's in the car with me you can tell when it's searching for signal because the speakers start clicking and chirping. It's pretty annoying when you're in an area with weak signal.
