Changing available screen resolutions in XP

Hey guys, here's the deal: I've got a widescreen monitor that I want to set up as a secondary device on a Toshiba laptop running XP Pro. I've installed the latest drivers (both video card and display) and Windows still refuses to let me select a proper "widescreen resolution" (ie 1680x1050 or something like that). I can only select the typical (1024x768 etc, etc) resolutions and these appear stretched on the widescreen monitor. Does anyone know how to change the available values in windows or if it's even possible?

You can't do it unless the graphics carde/chips in the laptop support it. What is the laptop brand, model, and screen size to include native resolution?

The reason the images appear stretched in the widescreen monitor is because the laptop's graphic system does not support Widescreen.

Open up your display properties (right click desktop --> properties --> settings)

Select the proper monitor on the top. (blue boxes with numbers)

Click Advanced

Go to the "Adapter" tab.

On the bottom, click "List All Modes..."

Find the resolution you need

It should probably be noted that, as far as I can tell, Windows XP won't support a 1680x1050 via analog. DVI only (source)

If you can't find it (it isn't a standard resolution in desktops, so you probably won't), you'll have to find another way to FORCE that resolution to be used with a utility such as PowerStrip.

You would probably be safer using NVIDIA drivers 71.84 and above or (NV)
Omega drivers (ATi) though
