Changing drive letters of system drives?

I'm sure I've read how to do this but can't for the life of me remember! Just installed XP on new hard drive and spotted it has called the new hard drive (system drive!) F: with my slave drive C: - I can change the drive letter of the slave drive, but can't change the system drive letter! Is there any way of doing this without having to reformat and reinstall?

You didn't really give enough info to tell you what to do. If you have a name-brand machine, the drive that came with it is jumpered as CS (Cable Select) so the position on the cable determines the drive letter (on an 80-wire cable, the drive on the end will start with C, the middle will start with D if you have a primary partition on it). If you re-jumper the drives to Master/Slave, then it doesn't matter what position on the cable the drives are. The one that is set Master will be C and the one set Slave will start with D (if there is a primary partition on it).

Well I don't know about xp but I have looked this up at microsoft for 2000. Text

It is not highly recommended.

I ended up just doing a reinstall to get mine right. I read a different article about 2000 where it said if reinstalling boot the cd and do the format then reboot cd and install. I haven't had this problem show with xp but I haven't installed/reinstalled xp as many times.I can't seem to find the article but when I did a reinstall of windows using the format option to clear the drive when it finished installing my windows drive was e. When I followed the instructions above it made the windows drive c.

Sorry, I thought I had system info in a sig there, oops *ashamed*

Basically, I had left both drives on cable select (new as device 0, old as device 1) then not looked closely enough during the install process! I guess the reason for the old drive staying as C was the previous installation of WinXP on there...

Anyway, I changed to manual master/slave jumper settings and reformatted, which neatly fixed it...
