Looking for a good laptop that I'm only gonna use for homework and use it on the wireless networks on campus... so I don't need good gaming performance at all. I've got my desktop for that. I'll buy the wireless card seperately if needed.

So basically, I just need adequate performance so I'm thinking at least a PIII .. and I'm thinking somewhere in the area of $1000 USD. any ideas? I honestly know zilch about laptops. Never used one ever.. well.. besides having to fix little issues for other ppl in my dorm.

I would go for the IBM R series. This is because IBM makes solid laptops and I hate the touchpad that is on most other laptops. IBMs always have the pointing stick which I can't live without. They start at $899, but you can get one with more features for a bettery price on e*bay. Some retailers even sell brand new ones on there.

If you're going for just a cheap laptop, then I would get the dell inspiron 1100. It's kinda bulky but you can't beat the price. The inspiron 600m is slimmer and much much better but at about $1200 it might be outta your range.

Speaking from personal experience, if you're going to lug around a laptop on campus, then you should get some that is slimmer and one that you can lug around in your backpack. Also one that has good battery life, although it is going to be hard to find a centrino system for $1000. If you don't mind a used laptop, I recommend getting a used IBM T series off of ebay or other online retailers. This laptop is slim and had decent battery life. Slim enough to fit into a backpack without you even knowing it's there.

Ditto for IBM

Otherwise the Samsung Subnotebooks are very light, relatively well built (can't beat IBM though) and not that expensive.

My brother bought the AVERATEC 3120V at Best Buy for 650.00, and has been very happy with it. It has a 1.33GHz Celeron, 256MB SDRAM, 12 in XGA TFT screen, 8x DVD-ROM, 30GB hard drive, 3 USB ports, integrated 10/100 LAN and v.90 modem. Great for a work laptop. Good for surfing, and general PC stuff. Not much of a gaming machine, but that is not what you are looking for, so may be just the thing for you. Also, it only has 1 PCMCIA slot, but that should be all you need, for your wireless card, since you already have 10/100 and a modem built-in. Here's the link, if you're interested:

check out the averatec 3120 at best buy. it's mentioned in the Hot Deals forum. I think it's $550 with a $50 gift card if you buy online. probably better to buy online because if you go to the store they will hassle you and no kidding about the hassle part about buying the PSP (performance service plan) which is NOT worth it.
